I smoke every day because every other form of escapism can't get me away from the modern hellscape that we currently exist in.

A doctor prescribed me coke to treat my idiopathic hypersomnia. Didn't realize computational finance grads could write scripts, but I'm happy

I wish I could smoke every day, but I get the munchies something fierce and I will put on weight immediately. I have to quit for my health. I just finished an eighth over the holiday weekend though, and I kinda hate myself right now.

This is after already quitting drinking, so I don't have many escapes left haha. I'm out here raw dogging the dystopian future with just my mind bro.

[-] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Weed speeds up my metabolism. So I'll get hungry but actually lose weight from the speed up. It's wild.

No alcohol, no sugar and no limit on weed works pretty well for me now. And I try to run everyday (huffing and puffing)

I think the first two are big factors and I cannot believe how stupid I was the last 5 years drinking everyday.

Yeah, I’m probably addicted to cannabis. That doesn’t particularly bother me, as it doesn’t negatively impact my life. I keep it to nights and weekends, and I don’t spend more on it than I can afford. I honestly have a much harder time quitting coffee than I do cannabis. If I go on vacation, I never have a problem leaving my weed at home, but I’ll be damned if I don’t have my caffeine. And that doesn’t seem to be a particularly harmful addiction either.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 months ago

it doesn’t negatively impact my life

Pretty sure that means that it by definition isn't an addiction but rather a benign dependence 🤷

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

Good luck explaining that to most people. I've had a cannabis dependence for years now, and I get called an addict by certain members of my family, even though I've held a job longer than most of them were in school. I partake everyday, but the boss doesn't care/suspect anything and my output meets/exceeds expectations, so they're happy with me.

BuT i'M aN aDdIcT lol

I know. Doesn't make it any less true, though, as you appear to be an excellent example of 🤷

Lucky. I can't sleep without weed, so if I'm going on vacation, it has to be to a place with legalization.

[-] compostgoblin 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah, that does suck. I do struggle a bit to fall asleep the first few nights without it, since I’m used to having a bowl before bed, but the thing that really gets me is how crazy vivid my dreams are when I’m taking a break. I’m prone to night terrors too, so it’s a bit of a roll of the dice on what those dreams are gonna be like

This amuses me as i use cannabis to increase resiliance to sensory overload. Yay autism.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

It helps so much to make my brain stop caring about Too Many Sounds and Bad Fabrics its wild.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Oh, shit.

Bad fabrics. Finally, someone else? E.g. touching some velvety stuff makes it feel like I can't breathe?

How do I learn more about it? I'm scared to know what it means, but can probably guess.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

About which? Being autistic or having sensory overload related to physical sensations?

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I've just never heard anyone else talk about being sensitive to particular materials.

Yup!!! Purely being subjective, but i think the "high" that neurotypicals describe is more of a filtering for nd folk.

Same but ADHD. Stops my brain from being a complete box of frogs for a few hours and makes everything delicious. Yay weed.

Haha. But this is funny, but also some ableist bullshit.

Not feeling daily agony can be habit forming, but it doesn't make someone into a rastafarian. It would be cool if it did. But it doesn't.

Just doing my part to fight misinfor-meme-tion.

Edit: Interestingly, the vote count of this post became more negative after I added emphasis around my stupid "misinfor-meme-tion" pun.

That is harsh, but fair. Still, I regret nothing.

[-] ameancow@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

There is a vast, vast number of people who self-medicate with pot, alcohol, coke, video games, internet forums, their phone and social media and just about anything that can produce pleasure responses and have fully embraced the idea that they "need" it to function. When really they've just over-adapted their brain to a particular state and it's not the chemical that is helping them as much as the basic biological fact that brain feels much, much worse without the equilibrium it's become adapted to. (Until a certain re-normalization process passes.)

Whether or not the meme posted here is "misinformation" is kind of subjective, as both these types of people do exist.

If you're afraid that medical or recreational cannabis will come under threat because of this kind of meme... my guy, it ain't going anywhere unless the GOP decides they want to renew the war on drugs and they will do that whether we meme about it or not. This administration is a consequence of too many people checking out and, well... self-medicating.

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

Source: a doctor with a flashlight and a rubber glove.

I think you're underestimating the amount of real pain that is caused by the current iteration of society. People aren't supposed to function in a world like this. It's broken and they're suffering. It's great if some small fraction of people can tough it out. Good for them. They're the aberration.

[-] ameancow@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

How am I underestimating anything? This is a phenomenon that people have been subject to for thousands of years. Alcoholism has been around since the dawn of agriculture and people had far, far shittier lives pre-industry. Objectively. The current iteration of society is the best we've ever had. Just because we haven't found a way to balance our wealth and conveniences with personal emotional satisfaction doesn't mean you would be happier two hundred years ago. Quite the opposite, and you would probably die a lot earlier and lot more miserable.

edit: I know you hate being told "it could be worse" but it's TRUE. It shouldn't make you stop wanting a better life, but it SHOULD make you stop using excuses to not do the best you can with the short life you have. Take a hard look at your needs, vices and self-medication habits and try to ask yourself honestly how much time you spend mentally validating something that feels good but doesn't actually help you. It should make you uncomfortable to think about.

i love getting information about addiction from non-doctors

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 months ago

Non-doctors and, presumably, non-addicts with no real world experience of what addiction actually is.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

i mean even among physicians, 3/4 of the doctors i've worked with know fuck all about addiction and of those about a few are humble enough to refer better educated physicians for relevant questions. it's a specialized subject.

[-] salacious_coaster@infosec.pub 13 points 2 months ago

I mean. There's smoking every day, and getting stoned every day. The right strains in the right (micro)dosage can be life-saving medicine.

[-] cannon_annon88@lemmy.today 6 points 2 months ago

How do you make that switch though? I would love to just be a micro dosing THC user, because it does help me out with a lot of things up to a point, where it quickly becomes too much

[-] Marafon@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Go to a dispo and ask for small dose edibles. Depending on where you are you can find edibles as low as 2.5mgs per dose. You should be able to find 10mg edibles anywhere you go and if you get something like a chocolate bar that you can further subdivide yourself you can fine tune your dose. The only pitfall is tolerance creeping up the more often you take it.

ETA: And if you want to limit your smoking amount, just buy a one hitter. Having to clear and load the pipe to get more than a little high will help prevent you from overdoing it.

[-] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Just put less than you normally would and be discipline about not going for more. There is no definition for what a micro dose is. Its just understood to be less. Try just doing half of what you normally do for a week and see how you feel from there.

[-] EditsHisComments@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

From experience, try to use strains with less THC and higher CBD and it generally will help. Then taking time to see what dosage is a good balance of pain relief without making you high, and for how long before using again. There's more to it, but that typically will be the easiest change to make. When you build a tolerance, make very small changes. It's difficult, but you'll start go see the effects if you stick with it. Cannabis is strong as hell these days lol

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 months ago

I don't think daily usage necessitates addiction. In my opinion addiction is continually use despite negative repercussions because of fear of withdrawal / not being able to operate without it.

Like I have sugary coffee almost every day but I wouldn't say I'm addicted because I'm not experiencing any negative consequences from it. If I were gaining weight or having heart problems and still kept to it then I'd say that's an addiction.

Same with pot, some people can use it every day without suffering many consequences. If your gaining weight from the munchies, or getting a smokers cough, or becoming antisocial etc. and still use it, that's when it becomes problematic.

[-] affenlehrer@feddit.org 14 points 2 months ago

I forget the details but I learned from my sister who worked in a rehab clinic that there are clinical criteria to diagnose addiction:

  1. Taking the substance in larger amounts or for longer than you're meant to
  2. Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to
  3. Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance
  4. Cravings and urges to use the substance
  5. Not managing to do what you should at work, home, or school because of substance use
  6. Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
  7. Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
  8. Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger
  9. Continuing to use, even when you know you have a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance
  10. Needing more of the substance to get the effect you want (tolerance)
  11. Development of withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance
[-] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

I can say yes to everything on this list with substances like alcohol, nicotine and amphetamine that I had problems with.

Almost zero checks with weed. There's no compulsion with it.

I never told myself no weed today and 15min later it's like I am watching myself go to the store to buy some.

[-] janonymous@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

You don't have to check all to be considered addicted, though.

[-] affenlehrer@feddit.org 4 points 2 months ago

That's true. I forgot the threshold how many you had to check for a diagnosis but the more you have, the more severe your addiction is

Like I have sugary coffee almost every day but I wouldn’t say I’m addicted because I’m not experiencing any negative consequences from it.

How would you feel/do, when there is a stressful day and you cannot have your coffee?

As for pot, i have met and been a daily smoker for many years. Everybody i knew that smoked daily had some social or personal issues and it definitely affected their ability to focus, memory and emotional awareness negatively.

I don't think that daily use of psychoactives can go without addiction. It can be beneficial as medication for some, but there will be side effects and withdrawal symptoms, like with non psychoactive medication too.

I'm addicted to caffeine. My university has a meal swipe program which equates to ~6 bucks and you can use 2 a day. I eat one big meal from the 'all you can eat' cafe, then get 2 energy drinks for the morning and afternoon, and just have ramen for dinner or sthm.

I currently have 3 spares because tbh I'm kinda getting sick of redbull. Idk what else to spend the meal swipes on because if you don't use them it's just wasted money

[-] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

"I am addicted to coke" looks like the one on the left and talks into his intercom, thinking it's a phone.

Zero deals made today, maybe bought coke.

[-] ameancow@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

My dad was the kind of person who would do coke and drink all day and pretended he was he was "doing business" when he was really just calling everyone in his contacts and loudly being obnoxious at them for an hour or two each.

No idea how much money he conned out of people to support his habit but I estimated he probably spent at least a several hundred thousand dollars on cocaine in his life, not counting the hundreds of thousands or more he spent on nightly dinners where he held a captive audience while he ranted and raved like Trump.

[-] Sputnik34@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I wish weed didn't fill me with anxiety at even the smallest doses. I go through periods where I try to push through the initial uncomfortable stages, hoping that I'll get used to being high and finally enjoy the drug but I am just filled with negative and self abusive thoughts. I hate weed but I wish I didn't :/

[-] UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

It's okay, you're not missing much.

Long term effects are often downplayed by enjoyers in my view.

But hey, I still take it like once every other month sometimes, especially if I want to not get too drunk but it's always a drag getting back to less procrastinating with my life.

It can be very helpful for some or in the way for others.

[-] AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I'm not addicted to coke I only do it when I want to get rocked out of my skull
