They don't ever seem to bother him or anyone else that walks by.

Hornets are generally fairly docile because they need to conserve their energy to chase me around neighborhood

My parents have a nest in their garage every year and nobody has ever been stung. They're very placid little helicopters.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 5 hours ago

I wouldn't know, because I'd NEVER go into that garage again. Ever.

The outside has been painted by Van Gogh.

My neighbor had one like this in his tree, bald face hornets. He would mow under it and do yardwork, they never bothered him. However, me across the street got stung on two separate occasions before I asked to split the cost of an exterminator because those bastards kept stinging me in the face. I hate killing things but I hate being stung more.

I have an uncontrollable fear reaction around wasps, they sense it, they get scared and then defensive, it's a nice vicious cycle.

Bald face hornets are extra scary. One of their tools is spraying venom into an animals eyes, leaving them temporarily blind

Once empty. That'll be worth $50-$75 on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace.

Hornets in your neighbourhood are a good thing - they eat wasps and other nuisances, and they do not usually sting you.

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 hours ago

wasp?! I heard about mosquitoes but never heard about wasps

[-] UpperBroccoli 5 points 8 hours ago

Aye. Technically, hornets are just a bigger kind of wasps, but they still do hunt their smaller cousins.

The only thing really to know is that it is not advisable to get too close to their nest. If you leave them be, they leave you be, too.

[-] Scrawny@reddthat.com 1 points 8 hours ago

Yeah, wasps are hardy a nuisance unless you're close to their nest. Hornets on the other hand go out of their way to ruin my day.
