Pave paradise, put up a parking lot 🎶

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

It used to be like that. Until the mid or the end or the 70s I'd say.

[-] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 10 points 11 hours ago

Oh, is Doug Ford in Paris? Because this is literally what happened in a beautiful transit connected beach in Ontario. The Ontario premier overruled the city Mayor and built a 3500 spot car park and said the car park would become the main tourist destination of the area.

torontosun.com/news/local-news/ford-vows-ontario-place-parking-lot-will-offer-massive-return-on-investment

You watch, it’ll probably be the No. 1 place where people will take pictures

What a dumbass comment. Why not charge $50 per 15 mins?

Edit: Sorry $49.99, obviously

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

No charge $27.50 but add a $22.50 fine if they are paying with euro instead of dollars.

My number one issue with all sights is that there is not enough parking. Big Ben? Where do I park? Pyramids? Parking. Statue of liberty? Come in parking! The first and usually only thing I think about is parking. If I can't park my car and walk less than 100m to the thing I want to see, what's the point?

/s because some people still won't see the sarcasm of this or the post. A lot of people do think that way

Stories from the USA. My mom said that when she was a little girl my grandparents used to take the kids on road trips and they would do this thing where when they got to the destination they wouldn't leave the car. Like, they would drive hours to see the monument (or whatever) and when they got there they would roll down the windows, slowly pass by the object going, "wow! Look there it is!", then they would roll up the window and drive away. This happened multiple times.

It's a fucking mystery to us. Didn't want to pay for a ticket? Savage, unmedicated ADHD? Just fucking with your children? All are totally plausible. She didn't realize it was weird until later in life.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 hours ago

We had visiting guests in Seattle and they were the same way, except these were free. Want to see the troll? Sure, go slow. Gas Works? Go slow by the side. So weird.

I had another friend that we drove around the peninsula. Every stop, he was on his phone and wanted to leave after 2 minutes. We're talking hours of driving to some of the most gorgeous places on earth and he's 1 minute in and looking for an exit. I still can't understand it.

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 7 hours ago

My family did that stuff too! Not for every trip, but I remember us driving to South Dakota and saying "Look there are the badlands" and such and such, but never getting out. There's Devil's Tower! Then we drove on. We'd get out occasionally, but not regularly.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Oh thats cruel for devil's tower. Its cool to drive past but walking it is amazing. Badlands looked cool from the car but we were just driving past

I'm gonna circle the walmart parking lot for 15 minutes looking for the closest spot to park to save 30 seconds of walking.

[-] yuri@pawb.social 14 points 1 day ago

like a decade ago my local walmart started closing one set of doors at ~10pm, and TO THIS DAY there is ALWAYS parking available in front of those doors. it doesn’t matter if you show up at noon, fuckers still avoid that entrance like they’re about to spend 10 hours in walmart. i’ll never understand the human mind.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Hey cmon they stopped letting me take the mart cart into the parking lot after I left one in the rain last time and I don’t wanna walk with my groceries in a WAGON what am I, that Greek guy with the rock? Sissy fist?

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Where's Robert Moses when you need him to build an expressway to the future parking garage on Liberty Island 😫

[-] Lyra_Lycan 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

A brutal wake up call for me was finding that the shit I'd said or heard from others in sarcasm is unironically some folks' belief. They don't realise how much everyone around them suffers thanks to their actual belief in misogyny/misandry/fascism being necessary, climate change being a myth, surveillance being security, one's existence being sinful, education being bad etc.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

Go to midwest america, you can't have sarcastic comments there because it IS their backwards ass yall queda beliefs.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 16 points 23 hours ago

That would still be less profitable than the insane amount they charge just to stand under the thing. I was just there and it was like more than $30 per person just to stand under it (way more for the elevator ride up!)

[-] ABasilPlant@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago

Isn't it free to stand under it? Going up costs money, yes.

https://www.toureiffel.paris/en/faq/spot/can-you-walk-beneath-eiffel-tower-without-paying-ticket

I was there last year, and I only paid for an éclair and a coffee at one of the cafés / restaurants underneath the tower.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago

Nope, they’ve fenced off the base area and most of the gardens.

[-] ABasilPlant@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

When did you last visit? i wonder if they changed it since i last visited in late 2023. I needed to pass through security checks to get into the general premises - gardens and such, and could stand under tower. No payment required.

Edited: this review on google maps (sorry) from two days ago says it's free to pass through: https://goo.gl/maps/ARW1jYzt3mGUEKgE8

[-] UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 10 points 13 hours ago

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a con job OP got ensnared in. Paris is well known for those type of things.

[-] Miaou@jlai.lu 2 points 17 hours ago

The fence has been there for some years (some antiterrorist measure), but I also don't recall paying.

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 55 points 1 day ago

Fucking AI slop. Hate this shit.

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 51 points 1 day ago

You're right, they should have rented the Eiffel Tower and built a temporary car storage facility to take this photograph.

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago

Back in my day we’d use gimp or photoshop to do clever editing by hand.

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 27 points 1 day ago

Depriving honest work from all the people who would be involved in creating a scene with props and practical effects?

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Folks still do that.

I mean, the moon landing would have been fake, were it not for Stanley Kubrick demanding to shoot on-scene and in-camera.

[-] s@piefed.world 6 points 1 day ago

Straw man fallacy. AI media is sensorially gross. The other media don’t necessarily look gross, but if they do look gross then it’s either because the artist intended for it to look gross or because capitalism curtailed the artist’s ability to achieve their vision.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Satire, 100%

If it's not - don't tell me, I'm clinging to sanity by a thread already

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Well for one, that's not what parking garages look like. For a second, even if it wasn't AI, it doesn't have to have been the Eiffel Tower. It could have been some other old tv antenna and the space is being used efficiently.

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago
