I’m not sure how chastising someone who gets onboard late is good for the cause. Movements take time to grow and being cliquish about it simply hobbles that growth.

The article isn't criticizing any individual specifically. We should all take note of who is just now pivoting on their support for genocide.

We had a similar lesson with the Iraq war. Many politicians and pundits parroted Bush about Saddam's WMDs and then later said it was all a lie. Those same people pandered lies again about 40 beheaded babies and secret Hamas bases under hospitals. Naming and shaming them now isn't the priority but we should not forget who they are unless we believe their lies again.

What this also has in common with Iraq is that we already knew. People who changed their minds later on act like they were responding to new information and are therefore reasonable people who were just previously misinformed. But the evidence was always there the whole time, and those who were against it were doing their best to shout it out whilst getting shut down with accusations of being terrorist sympathizers.

I agree for normal, everyday people. But for the politicians and members of the media that enabled and in some cases cheered on this genocide , FUCK THEM. We can't allow them to launder there reputation with an "oops guess i was wrong" statement and let them keep running this country. If we don't hold them and there terrible decision making accountable then they'll just get us into another atrocity in a couple years, just like Iraq.

"Someone" is a weird way to say "multinational conglomorate news media that has been throwing accusations of antisemitism for years at people for as much as saying Israel should kill less kids."

[-] modestmeme@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Wtf? What on earth did you think I was saying?

Most of the criticism isn't directed at a random"someone" its directed at a cadre of DNC/political insiders and press guys who know better and are still treating gaza like its just experiencing an sudden scarcity of food for no discernable reason.

In other words the people being made fun of here aren't "onboard late to the cause", they're opportunists who see a shifting public opinion and want to pretend they weren't cheerleading genocide to get free vacations or whatever. The only reward for "befriending" these public opinion mercenaries is the inevitable backstab.

So brave finally speaking out!

It is ~~almost~~ like a propagandized media without freedom of the press from all directions, political, commercial, and the legislature; like someone made a single decision to change posture

I think it's likely an organic move which happened despite all of the forces you mention, due to massively changing public sentiment informed by alternate sources outside of their control. I think if the media was able to keep pro-Palestine sentiment low, we wouldn't be seeing any of this flip. Basically they have no choice but to flip or lose even more of their power to propagandize. Which I guess could have come down from the top, but such a directive still probably happened because of what I mentioned.

I think things are just going to be so so so bad tht politicians know they need to get ahead of it.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 1 week ago

All of us simply made that choice to stand alone, together.

Best line.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 week ago

I don't care if they're only getting with the program now, as long as they're helping throw sand on the gears of genocide.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Just in time for the last Palestinian to starve to death!

a comment section that breathes "I care more about policing reputations of those in power than stopping genocide"
