Shit! I want to donate but I blew all of my money on Trump's recent trip to Scotland.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 21 points 21 hours ago

How is this real?

We've gone off the rails

[-] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 15 points 21 hours ago

Can’t buy yaoi on steam, but this is somehow totally acceptable and inoffensive.

[-] tnarg42@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago

I mean, they do have a voting block that regularly donates to televangelists... Those extra private jets have to come from somewhere.

Wouldn't it be more effective to make the wealthy and corporations pay tax?

[-] kubica@fedia.io 86 points 1 day ago
[-] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 day ago

Right? How dare them?

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Worse - socialism, and possibly Marxism!

Straight to jail!

[-] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 86 points 1 day ago

I will never help pay down the national debt willingly. The 1% did it, so they can pay it back.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago

I don't think that is the case

It has more to do with 50-100 years of reckless spending

[-] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

And what class is usually in control of the government?

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 21 points 1 day ago

The debt of the nation are the income and assets of the 1%. They don't want the debt to disappear.

So the US tax code is switching to a "Pay what you want" model?

Rich people: "Switching?"

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Honestly it would be cool if Americans could choose how their money is used. Have a base tax plus you choose 3 programs out of 10.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

When I was a kid, I assumed that was how it worked. When I found out it wasn't, my reaction was something like, "then what even is a democracy?"

[-] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 2 points 9 hours ago

"and to the republic for which it stands"

Not a democracy : /

[-] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago

Ultra Rich: "Pay?"

[-] hodgepodgin@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 day ago

US government loan forgiveness 🤣

[-] nialv7@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago

Might as well start a GoFundMe at this point. I heard people nowadays will throw tons of money at fascists.

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 1 points 21 hours ago

The news is basically free Only Fans where I get to see Americans get fucked by their government.

That sounds just like taxes, but with extra steps.

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 13 points 1 day ago

Except you already pay taxes this is just to bleed the poor dry faster, qnd drip barely anything towards the debt so they can claim the finances are fine, to keep the real government happy, investors.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 21 hours ago

It is voluntary

In Bill Lumbergh's voice: If every American could just chip in $100k that would be greeaat.

[-] sad_detective_man@leminal.space 20 points 1 day ago

I want to see who donates. they can't make something like that and then not let us laugh at whoever does it

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 21 hours ago

I feel like it would be better to stop creating even more dept...

[-] sad_detective_man@leminal.space 1 points 21 hours ago

I'm pretty sure they're already getting 30% from my gross. Plus I somehow owe them an additional few grand every year.

As of Q1 2025 US household debt was $18.2 trillion dollars. This is like a guy who lives in a van down by the river asking a homeless guy to help him make his van payments.

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Even worse - a guy who lives in a big, white house asking it of a guy who lives in a van down by the river.

Its funny because the largest holder of US debt is social security. So most of the debt is owed to the workers. You are paying the money back you borrowed in the first place.

Starving children and invading countries comes with a cost! Help the state that hates you!

[-] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago

The US Treasury Department is now accepting Venmo and PayPal payments from those who want to donate money to reduce the nation’s ballooning $36.7 trillion debt.

We're all just trying to find the guy responsible!
