my friend from ontario says:

"This might be for folks who work on oil rigs (Edmonton is close to several), a vehicle like this means they can travel as a full crew. It's still terrible but that might explain it."

[-] running_ragged@lemmy.world 141 points 2 months ago

They could get a crew van, fit more in it, and still fit in a standard parking spot.

Probably also quite a few thousands of dollars cheaper.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 47 points 2 months ago

Fuck you, vans are gay and you're stupid cuck. /s

That said, I recently saw a guy that bucked the trend and pimped his family van instead of going full truck. Lowered suspension, wider wheels, hot vinyl and a spoiler. Looked pretty good tbh.

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So like custom conversion vans in the 70s and 80s?

[-] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 2 months ago

Gotta paint a big wizard on the side for full effect

[-] Booboofinget@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I guess I'm old enough to remember when vans were cool. 😭

I thought the same, but there may be a very specific combination of conditions where this could make sense: bad roads where ground clearance is needed, no sharp curves that require shorter wheel base, need to take 8 people and need to take their tools/materials. but probably they did just because they could

[-] PlzGivHugs@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 months ago

Honestly, those conditions sound like pretty much exactly what I'd expect working oil in Alberta, and given the cost to make that horrific of a modification, it wouldn't suprise me if it was something used for work.

It also would not suprise me if it was some jerk with more money than sense, esspecially as this wouldn't necessarily conflate with the first.

[-] Mpatch@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

No ground clearance on van, gona get stuck in the mud. less payload on van, can't just drop a skid of what ever or extra long things like hydraulic cylinders into a van with out akward fucking around. less tow capacity on van, notice the tow bar on the back... What are you gona put a welder, diesel cans, gas cans, pales of hydraulic oil for equipment/ slip tanks, pumps and what not into the van too with the occupants? What about the greasy and oily ass clothes. Throw em in the van too? So they stain and fill the cab with VOCs?

This is a purpose built one off, and alot of you are out of touch with how work gets done. Not evey job is hauling standard 8x4 drywall. Alot more trades work than just slinging plaster around.

[-] Machinist@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

This is totally a male enhancement device due to the lift and frame length. It's weak in the frame and real regular off-road use will crack it.

It's a fucking joke just like the joke that drives it. "Look at me! I'm such a tough manly manchild. My beard is huge and I listen to country music even though I've never owned a cow and live in the suburbs."

Real working 4x4/dually trucks tend to be factory height (little higher than factory rear wheel) as you don't want to lift heavy shit higher than you have to. They're also beat to hell because they do real work.

Comments like this are so ridiculous. Do you really think nothing ever gets build in Europe because people use vans and buses instead of emotional support vehicles? Canada is just another country, not fucking Mars

[-] gizmonicus@sh.itjust.works 35 points 2 months ago

Ah yes the Ford F9000 Pedestrian Pulverizer

[-] mercano@lemmy.world 26 points 2 months ago

Even if you somehow need a vehicle this size, you can park it in a way that it only takes up two spaces, not four.

[-] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 11 points 2 months ago

They where not even trying, with that thing you could go for the 8 spaces.

Too much truck, not enough dick, as they say.

Slide under the midpoint with a battery powered angle grinder or a sawzall and cut 3/4 of the way through one side of the frame. Then you just let physics do the rest when they hit a good hard bump.

Xanthan gum and muriatic acid will make a nice corrosive paste that might do the trick if you're into edging with your sabotage.

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 12 points 2 months ago

Sawing that thing without being caught is hard. So, about that xanthan and muriatic paste, what kind of gloves should I use for protection?

[-] Machinist@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Nitrile gloves, thicker the better. It will break them down but it will take a while. The fumes are chlorine gas, but aren't that bad if you're outside. What you really have to watch out for is getting it in your eyes, wear goggles.

Baking soda will neutralize it, so you might want a gallon of water and some baking soda on hand. It will burn your skin if you leave it on you, but it takes a minute and you have time to just wash it off.

Paint brush would be a good way to apply it.

[-] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Nitrile, thickness ½ mm, should last you about an hour.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

At first I thought this was here because of how stupid and obscene this truck is. This just SCREAMS "my penis is 1 inch, and I'm insecure". It gets a whole 30 feet to the gallon!

Then I noticed the park job. This is the type of park job I'd intentionally smash with the shopping cart, on my way to return my cart to those little cart return cages.

This guy is an asshole. Plain and simple. Yes, fuck the truck too, because it shouldn't even exist, but aldo fuck this guy in particular. I hope a meteor falls from the sky, crushes the back half of his truck into a pancake, and otherwise doesn't cause any injuries or harm.

[-] hddsx@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago

My dude I think you need help. There are legitimate reasons for a six seater with a bed. Not in my use case and, as I can see by your response, definitely not in yours.

While personal vehicles used for transportation are largely against logic, there are industrial uses for a truck like that.

[-] Grass@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago

shopping is most certainly not one of those use cases

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 months ago

But the park job? Could it not fit in two?

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 months ago

there are no industrial uses for a truck like this, you do not need a lifted 6-seater with an open bed for anything other than satisfying a need for attention.

you could maybe invent a highly specific usecase where this would be convenient, but that scenario is going to be a fantasy that doesn't apply to reality.

I've been saying Canada is just Diet US. Credit where it's due, they elected the lesser dumbass. Also, healthcare. Good on y'all. Obviously Canada is better than the US but my fellow Americans act like it's the promised land or something. The cost of living is still to damn high, and they still have the same right-wing populist idiots we have. Also, I get our bills and coins suck. Dead old white man and all but how is the fucking royals supposed to be better? I think fascist monarchs are way worse. To any Canadians offended by this, please don't be. It was not my intent to offend you and I very much realize I am throwing stones from a glass house here. Love you guys!

there should be a law that if a car goes past a certain size it's officially a public transit and people can barge in and expect you to drop them off along your ride.

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Does canada have really lax limo safety laws? i recall hearing about stretch SUVs in the US that killed like entire friend groups during prom in the US because there's absolutely no regulation of these things in some places.

No shot that's a real/unmodified model... right?

[-] CandleTiger@programming.dev 30 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

No these are modified. Last time I saw a vehicle like that it was a Mormon family out camping with their 17 kids

Edit: honestly if you’ve got a giant family and you’re basically a half a busload of people everyplace you go, that’s pretty much the ideal best use case for a private car.

Same with this picture — if somebody felt the need to pay $$$$$ for extending the truck, they’re probably actually using that space for something productive and not just driving it around empty. I’m way more mad about the incredible waste of every suburban individual having their own heavy duty cargo hauler for daily chores that don’t need it, then I am about modified special-purpose vehicles doing a job.

No car manufacturer mass produces a chassis like that. That's an unholy marriage of a suburban and an F250 super duty.

[-] AlsaValderaan 11 points 2 months ago

I didn't know they made buses with a cargo bed.

I used to see that one (or a reasonable hand-drawn facsimile)all the time when I lived there. I thought it was just an Edmonton-themed limousine.

[-] don@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

That’s no truck, that’s an Air Force practice bombing target. Or should be.

[-] Entitle9294@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

It goes up to 11.
