What are some communities you've subscribed to, even though there are only a handful of posts, hoping that it will one day be active?

I recently ran into the problem where I signed up on a different federation or whatever and had to jump through a few hoops to get subscribed to the community I wanted.

I get that that's part of the allure of Lemmy but it's also a stumbling block. I can't just go to any community and sign up at the click of a button. Hopefully there's a workaround for this soon or I imagine a lot of lazy users like myself will just look elsewehere.

The apps I’ve tried thus far on iOS make this process much easier than the web clients. I think with a little refinement, most users could have a “reddit-esque” experience without fully knowing how the federation works under the hood.

I hate it when the community I want to join is spread across like five different instances with varying levels of activity and user count. Wish we could just Pick one and make it The One community.

[-] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I understand the desire for that, but tbh I'd be just as happy with something like Reddit's multi-reddits to round up multiple similar communities in one feed. I appreciate the subtle differences that communities around the same topic can have simply by slight variations in their focuses.

Me too!

But this was your chance to list some of the lesser known ones that you, in particular, are interested in.

@BestOf or https://kbin.social/m/Bestof

Disclaimer: I'm the moderator. I would just like a good place in the fediverse where I can see all the best of it.

[-] Vorticity@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

How do I subscribe to a kbin community from a lemmy account?

[-] Confused_Scallup@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah wondering the same. I thought that was the whole point of the fediverse thing

[-] TeaHands@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Tagging @Vorticity@lemmy.world as well in case either of you haven't got it working yet. Just take the actual URL of the Kbin mag and search for it from your instance, like you would normally search with the ! syntax for a Lemmy community.

[-] Vorticity@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

So, if I search for https://kbin.social/m/Bestof I get no results. To do this, I went to "Communities" at the top of the page, then searched for that URL. I got this as a result:

[-] anadem@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That search finds Bestof.. as in your post but there's not "Subscribe" button so how do I add it to my subscribed communities? Sorry for teh ignorant Q, i'm ignorant

Searching for !bestof@kbin.social does the same (iirc the latter is the preferred way to get to a federated instance's community, but I'm a noob so waht do i know?)

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

I'm in the middle of linking up all the various crafty communities with a central list, because if you're a crafter you're probably interested in more than one of them. So, all of those?

Here's the list as posted in the leathercrafting community (which you should also check out), we've got loads of stuff from crochet to dicemaking. Crafters, assemble!

I wish my local city's community had more people, but I'm afraid they'll never move over. Oh well, i created it anyway.

I've also created a few others that will get buried.

What city? I'm suffering the same fate with San Diego.

My hometown community (San Diego). I feel like a bushy-tailed fool, only one doing any posting on Lemmy. But I'm done with R., so off I go...

[-] thumbman@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Disc golf. There's just seems to be nothing for it yet.

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I've been trying to get !health@lemmy.world off the ground but it's not getting much traction.

[-] PKRockin@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

How come it’s !health and not just health? That seems confusing.

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

! Is just a way to refer to communities, and @ to users. If you type ! or @ and some characters, you'll get autofilled results.

So, it is health.

[-] owatnext@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Me and my co-mod are trying to get !bluey@lemmy.world going. We get a few posters, but it's mostly just us for now. But we hold out hope! I imagine it will catch on more eventually.

[-] cloudless@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

I'm a Bluey fan. Thanks for setting it up so I don't have to go back to Reddit.

[-] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Virtual Reality could use some love

[-] seacocker@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I wish there was more active participation. I mod one small community with 36 subscribers and only my posts.

[-] kabe@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Remember the old ~90% lurker / ~9% commenter / ~1% poster ratio. Most communities here haven't yet reached a size where you see a variety of active contributors yet.

I moderate two communities that have now reached >200 subscribers and we're only just seeing people other than mods actively posting stuff.

[-] DudePluto@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Old photos in real life? That's a good idea for a community. I went to check it out hoping I'd have something to contribute but unfortunately I don't. One day it will be a lot more active though, I believe it. Just the good ol' ratio of lurkers to active users.

I feel your pain at comedy heaven. One day lol

[-] patchw3rk@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm the same. I'm at https://kbin.social/m/Bestof and I'm moderating nothing for now.

I wish the Super Smash Bros Lemmy was more active. I wanted to message the owner to offer to mod because Sunspider helps with Lemmy.world and has their hands full probably but can't figure out how to do that on Jerboa.

SSB is one of the first video games I ever played and I've been active for over 20 years in this series. The Nintendo Switch does not make it easy to pull my files so it's a little harder to save and post clips unlike BotW or other games

[-] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I'm not familiar with Jerboa (I'm still kinda waiting on mobile apps to develop more), but you may try messaging them by logging in via browser instead.

From there you should be able to navigate to the community, tap the sidebar button, scroll a little to see their name at the bottom, tap it & see their profile & an option to message them.

[-] Grant@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Thank you for the information, my guy!
