Notes:

  • I'm not vouching for any of these communities, check at your own discretion. Some of them are abandoned or inactive, so if you see one without activity that might be interesting, consider bringing it back to life and crosspost here. Communities with no content whatsoever aren't included.

  • Work in progress - let me know if you know of new communities that aren't in the list, or if you have other feedback.

(1) Kbin is a different network from Lemmy. Interactivity may be limited or delayed.

(2) These instances aren't federated with lemmy.world. To interact, you need to have an account on an instance that federates with them.

Important: Some instances may gravitate towards politics or philosophies different from your own. Inclusion of a health community of any instance does not mean endorsement of that philosophy.

In a newly funded federal study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers at Mass General Brigham demonstrated that their liquid biopsy test, called HPV-DeepSeek, can detect HPV-related head and neck cancers as early as 10 years before symptoms develop. According to the study’s authors, diagnosing these cancers earlier could increase treatment success rates and reduce the need for aggressive therapies.

The new research reinforces how complex the neurodevelopmental disorder is and that there isn’t a single cause.

Story refers to this Nature article (paywalled): Features of autism can affect age of diagnosis – and so can genes (paywall; use reader mode): https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-03180-8

Body says research has found ‘no consistent association’ and urges pregnant women to follow doctors’ advice

The World Health Organization (WHO) is pushing back against contested claims by the Trump administration that acetaminophen use during pregnancy heightens the risk of autism, further underscoring that no scientific consensus supports such a connection.

“Extensive research, including large-scale studies over the past decade, has found no consistent association,” the agency said in a Wednesday statement.

“[The] WHO recommends that all women continue to follow advice of their doctors or health workers, who can help assess individual circumstances and recommend necessary medicines.”

Since the start of Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives in 1985, over 517,000 lives have been saved from better treatment and proactive screening, according to the American Cancer Society.

In the 1980s in the United States, only one in four women were getting screened for breast cancer, and access to screening technology was limited, Sivendran said.

That began to change in October 1985, when the American Cancer Society partnered with other groups to launch a week-long event devoted to raising awareness about breast cancer. The campaign quickly gained momentum as more organizations joined in, and by 1990 President George H. W. Bush issued a proclamation officially designating October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The National Library of Medicine Nlm is a resource provided by the National Institute of Health nih in the United States. If you are not involved in science, you may not be aware of this resource, but it is basically used by every biomedical scientist across the world every day. This resource helps scientists to develop cures for diseases, to develop therapies and diagnostics. You could even use this resource to find out whether there really is a connection between autism and paracetamol / tylanol or whether that is total nonsense. The way you vote has a direct impact on your health and the healthcare of your loved ones. Make sure that facts and science prevail, and that lies and pseudoscience do not succeed.

New cases of cancer have been rising among younger people, worrying patients and doctors about causes. A new study suggests increasing numbers of cases of early onset cancer are largely due to improved and more routine screening, while mortality rates among younger people haven’t changed.

The study, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, compared rates of new diagnoses over the past three decades to mortality rates of the fastest-rising cancers in adults under 50.

Of the eight cancers the research team studied, only two, colorectal and endometrial, showed increases in deaths. Other cancers included thyroid, anal, pancreatic, kidney, myeloma and small intestine. While breast and kidney cancers have increased in incidence, the mortality rates across all age groups have decreased in recent years.

In the wake of that decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, supporters of abortion rights expressed concern that losing the national right to abortion would bring increased scrutiny of women during pregnancy, pregnancy loss or birth. In Georgia, for instance, a woman was arrested and charged in March after, authorities said, she disposed of her miscarried fetus in a dumpster. The charges were ultimately dropped.

Researchers at Pregnancy Justice say the number of prosecutions is likely to be higher than the 412 reported. Because of a change in methodology, they couldn’t say with certainty whether it’s higher than before Dobbs.

About 58 million pounds of corn dogs and other sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled across the U.S. because pieces of wood may be embedded in the batter, with several consumers reporting injuries to date.

According to a Saturday notice published by the Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recall covers select "State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” products from Texas-based Hillshire Brands, which is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods.

The contamination problem was discovered after Hillshire received multiple consumer complaints, the service notes, five of which involved injuries. The company later determined that a “limited number” of these products included “extraneous pieces of wooden stick within the batter,” Tyson said in a corresponding announcement — adding that it opted to initiate a recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

On Sept. 22, Donald Trump pushed an unproven link between Tylenol and an increase in autism in children, and he issued an urgent warning to expectant mothers not to take the medication.

What do we know about the drug? Tylenol is used to treat a several conditions, such as mild to moderate pain, fever, headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, backaches and colds. According to medical experts, when taken as directed, traditional over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) can be safe and effective.

Tylenol wasn't widely used until 1950, when Tylenol Elixir for Children, a prescription medication at first, was promoted as an aspirin substitute, according to Tufts University School of Medicine. Acetaminophen, often sold under the brand name Tylenol, had long been considered the safest option for managing headaches, fever and other pain during pregnancy.

Class action lawsuit alleges company failed to warn about risks of using contraceptive injection Depo-Provera

The drugmaker Pfizer faces a US lawsuit brought on behalf of women who developed brain tumours, which they say are linked to their use of the company’s contraceptive injection Depo-Provera.

The class action lawsuit alleges that the US pharmaceutical company failed to warn women and doctors about an increased risk of developing an intracranial meningioma if Depo-Provera, a quarterly injection, is used for more than a year.

A court hearing will take place in Pensacola, Florida, on Monday.

Among the other factors significantly contributing to heart attacks were spontaneous coronary artery dissections (SCADs), where tears in artery walls collect blood, embolisms (blood clots traveling from other areas of the body), and other stressors acting on the body (such as anemia).

The team also found that many SCAD-related heart attacks were initially misattributed to atherothrombosis, especially in women, where SCAD was the cause nearly six times as frequently. If heart attack causes are misdiagnosed, then doctors might take the wrong approach to trying to prevent the next one.

As fewer children get their flu shots, cases of a rare, severe complication are rising. Last season, the U.S. experienced the highest number of pediatric flu deaths in 15 years.

Cases of pediatric ANE and other flu-related encephalopathies are on the rise. During the 2024-25 flu season, 109 children were diagnosed with the rare complication, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the new report, 84% of kids with influenza-associated encephalopathy whose vaccination status was known weren’t vaccinated.

The finding comes as the nation logged 280 pediatric flu deaths last year, the deadliest ever aside from the 2009-10 H1N1 pandemic, as well as falling rates of children vaccinated against influenza.

Donald Trump announced Thursday that brand-name or patented pharmaceutical products will be subject to a 100% tariff starting October 1 – unless the drugmaker is building a manufacturing plant in the US.

Trump has been promising for months to levy tariffs on pharmaceutical imports, which avoided tariffs during his first term. The president sees tariffs as a way to pressure drug manufacturers to ramp up production in the US and to strengthen the supply chain for essential medicines.

Also, Trump has pointed to tariffs as a way to fulfill his vow to lower drug costs, though experts say that is unlikely to happen.
