What if Vampirism is a bacterial infection and it makes the wielder drink blood because that is what sustains the bacteria. I think I'm just imagining Parasite Eve again, but with bacteria in place of mitochondria.

In the video game series The Elder Scrolls, vampirism is actually contracted as a disease that can be cured if you catch it soon enough.

[-] Malgas@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago

But also it's a magical curse from Molag Bal.

Though the metaphysics of TES are weird enough that it's not really safe to assume anything has the same underlying cause as it would in the real world (e.g. sunlight comes from another dimension through a tear in space). So maybe all diseases are actually curses in the setting.

[-] ghostlychonk@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

Possibly. I know that the vampire disease is canonically different between the Cyrodill and Skyrim regions.

IIRC rabies has quite a few similarities to various vampire myths (e.g. aversion to water, aversion to strong smells, aggression).

In my home brew ttrpg setting, it's viral. A magical virus, but a virus.

and can it be cured by garlic?

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Not cured, but garlic does cause a great deal of pain, and can reduce their healing.

Oooh, a Parasite Eve remaster would be nice.....

Tbf, I wouldn't want to have hand sanitizer thrown at me either - especially if it gets into my eyes...

Why no, I am not a vampire... why do you ask?

Why no, I am not a vampire

Oh and you probably don't want us driving wooden stakes through your heart either, huh?

That seems presumptuous of you!:-P I mean, I would prefer you not do it while I'm still alive but after that... you do you, whatever floats your boat. 🛥️

You guys really shouldn't talk about pale skinned people with garlic sensitivities like that.

The coffin in my room is because it looks cool. I do not sleep it it, that is what the bed is for. The bottles have a cranberry drink in them do not drink them they are mine and they are special and expensive.

Now, can I come in?

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

That's "may" I come in. Unless...

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 1 week ago

Uh. Well. See technically that's why I asked.

[-] seaplant@slrpnk.net 28 points 1 week ago

wait did 'holy water' just mean 'the strong stuff the monks are brewing'?

[-] JennyLaFae 25 points 1 week ago

Although Holy Water™ may be diluted indefinitely and still be considered "holy" we do recommend 70% HBV (Holy by Volume) for your anti-undead topical needs and dilution below 40% for internal purification.

Weird how soap never got it included in the supernatural remedy arsenal. Maybe too mundane in a 'I'm always using soap anyway'-way ...

[-] Kratzkopf@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 1 week ago

They didn't really get the importance of handwashing before the 1840s as far as I know.
