I remember I was at a pride event in a major city. I remember when they excluded trans. Remember rainbow capitalism supports the patriarchy and business as usual. The working class is in danger. Democrats use minorities as human shields. Fascism is a failed liberalism as capitalism is in crisis. Woke is a joke. You were co-opted before you even started.

Maybe this year we post the pride flag upside-down?

[-] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 1 week ago

Not a bad idea, the red hats wouldn't be able to tell. It'd be an inside secret.

[-] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

It'd be an inside secret because even some allies wouldn't be able to tell of they're not particularly good with colours (me)

I prefer to be a bit more upfront:

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

They'll catch on and see it as a positive.

[-] akilou@sh.itjust.works 46 points 1 week ago

Wait, are straight people in charge of pride month this year?

[-] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

Straight people during pride month:

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 week ago

March: Irish for a day.

June: Gay for a month.

Pride is a season around a day, much the way that the Thanksgiving / Christmas is a season around specific days. A lot of families have to gather from far reaches together for Thanksgiving feast and Christmas Day, hence there's preparation and travel as well as food prep and gift gathering. Halloween is similar for those who take it seriously. It's a day for the kids but it's a month (or more!) for those who want to represent.

Pride ~~wasn't~~ isn't allowed everywhere, and in the beginning it only happened in those municipalities that had enough of a gay village (an LGBT+ community) to be a voting bloc. As a result there was a lot of travel arrangements from self-discovered people across the country. There were a lot of phone calls to friends to friends from last year if they'll still provide a place to crash.

The pride parade day is typically the weekend of June 28th (the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising). But sometimes the parade has to accommodate other circumstances in the city, so check with the organizers to get time and date confirmed.

A lot of those attending like to prepare their attire and accessories to look good. And if there are counter-protests or unfriendly law enforcement (more common than we like) then protest gear (first aid kits, bear spray, anonymizing bloc) may also be appropriate and add to the preparation schedule.

I mean... If that's what you want. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bend over.

Our neighborhood (business association but that's downplayed) hosted their first Pride last year, made attempts at getting actual queer people involved this year, and then announced they were $20k in the hole due to sponsors pulling out. FOR CHRISTS SAKE. Everything about this is wrong. Pride is supposed to be COMMUNITY BASED. When sponsors pull out, we're now having to scale back plans. As a local queer community-building non-profit, I'm having to pay money to this group to have a presence, and they want me to supply volunteers to work the main event... wtf is happening... they've inverted it

[-] Catoblepas 9 points 1 week ago

You might want to reread the post, because nothing about it implies straight people are in charge of pride. Only that the straight response to pride month tends to be empty celebratory phrases instead of recognizing how LGBTQ people are still being hurt.

[-] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

This post reminded me it's been a bit since I've done any volunteering; just emailed a local org that does concealed carry and gun safety courses for LGBT+ folks to see if they could use an extra hand. So, thanks for posting this!

There's only one effective way to handle a confrontation with a Nazi, and that requires you to be armed!

The fascists are just expecting the rainbow to fade away. But in reality, it's gonna be like leprechaun in space

[-] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

leprechaun in space

hmmm. the fourth installment in the series! a 1996 horror comedy film about a leprechaun who chases a princess and a crew of space marines

kinda can't not watch it now

[-] einlander@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If they believed love is love we wouldn't be here in the first place.

[-] Korne127@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Great. Generalizations about people depending on their sexuality.

[-] einlander@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I'm speaking of the people in general against pride/LGBT. If they actually believed what they preached then we would not be where we currently are.

[-] Korne127@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah, that's fair (although honestly, I think many of those people don't "preach" anything like love is love). I just didn't like that you implied straight people would generally not do that, but yeah, I'd agree if you said "all of them".

[-] angrystego@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Well, the people against pride are not the ones thinking love is love. They're the ones thinking love is only right between a cis straight man and woman. This meme is directed at straight allies, not adversaries.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Hi, "straight ally" here. The meme's (and @einlander's) intent was obvious and I'm not offended. Moreover, I would go so far as to say that anybody who does get offended was lying when they claimed to be an ally in the first place.

Y'all have way better things to do than to try to white-knight for the already-privileged majority, LOL!

[-] angrystego@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Sure, I was not saying the meme is not ok, I was trying to correct eilander's probable misunderstanding of who the meme is directed at. I was not evaluating the meme's legitimacy.

[-] LoveSausage@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 week ago

It is rather a problem that pride allows cops, companies and rightwingers (as long as they profess to equally push down people) in their parades .

I will show up once the bricks are back in fashion

[-] uriel238 1 points 1 day ago

Expect counter protests and unfriendly police departments. If they show up, bricks may be appropriate after all.

First aid, water bottles and other protest support kitch will better serve to help and will be needed by attendees regardless.

[-] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

pitch a big tent and kick out anyone who misbehaves within it. might be me but definitely never for homophobia.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago

That sounds like a threat!

[-] ameancow@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

People do not care about other people. People are not empathetic.

All people really want is validation, and for liberal, middle-class straight people, feeling validated means supporting a company that displays a rainbow for a week out of a year so they can say they're not hateful bigots and thus feel validated.

You all need to understand this, not so you can give up and be doomers, but so you can more effectively advocate for human rights. Knowing what dark, selfish dials and levers are set behind the average person's values gives you the opportunity to find ways to get your better results without spinning in circles. Yes, their personal values on equality are selfish and hollow... but so are most values until they become so standard in society that the alternative becomes to shameful to contemplate. We've done this many times in history, but we lose progress the moment we expect people do to the right thing for its own sake.

The right is great at leveraging people's desire to be validated and accepted to further their own goals. Can YOU think of ways to make people feel a desperate, panicked need to support YOUR values? When we all start thinking like villains just a little we will have fewer villains in the world.

ITT: naive children who think someone saying their demonstrably ineffective activism needs reworking, is actually advocating for right-wing ideology. We're so cooked.

[-] IzzyJ@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Of course this is downvoted, but you're totally right. Most people are self interested and don't really have values, including most of us for that matter. I was never transphobic, but I certianly started caring more after "hatching"
