I found myself down a YouTube rabbit hole once of people one-upping each other by making segmented displays with fewer and fewer segments and seeing who could use the least and still have it be decipherable for all numbers

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Minimum is 4 for ten digits

[-] atocci@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

There was a smaller subset that challenged themselves with 3 segment displays for 0-6

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Got a link to anything about that? I'd love to check it out but am having trouble finding anything.

[-] atocci@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Here's one I had in my YouTube history
I like the top comment here

at this point it's honestly easier to read a row of leds displaying the number in binary

I found another one but I feel like it's cheating since one of the segments is divided into two parts that light together.

Thanks! They're terrible, but it gets the juices flowing ...

Only with a rectangular 8. Doesn’t work for a ‘real’ 8. This solves that issue.

[-] yetAnotherUser@feddit.de 15 points 1 year ago

Except you have to turn the thing on its head for some numbers which I consider a worse tradeoff.

watch the video linked in another comment. There are circle based 7 segment displays, if you realy need those curves.

i can see from how you did 'real' that 8, that i don't need to remind you that there are no real 🖐️✌️🖕 :)

This. Wake up, people!

[-] Ddhuud@lemmy.world 72 points 1 year ago

Have you ever seen a 7 segments display?

[-] anhkagi@jlai.lu 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah I thought about that too

[-] Gork@lemm.ee 30 points 1 year ago

Don't give New Years party glasses manufacturers any more ideas.

[-] lugal@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

They won't do it because they can only sell them once

[-] revoopy@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago

I argue that when presented with 9 normal looking numbers, the o is not an acceptable alternative to 0

[-] miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

So many fonts just do whatever to be different and stand out from the crowd, but all it does is making it easier to avoid them

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It just looks like a lowercase 0. Lowercase digits often look better anyway.

Look up lowercase digits in your typography manual and be enlightened. And also start making nicer documents.

[-] MyUnclesSecret@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

You can make every digit 0-9 with a boxy 8. Look at any 7 segment display.

Straight up this is exactly what came to mind for me as well

It's a great watch for those that haven't BTW, I'd recommend it if you're curious

I want a clock that illuminates like this, but I guess it'd need to be able to flip to really do it with just a 4 and 8.

[-] Wirlocke 3 points 1 year ago

It wouldn't need to flip if you just make a symmetrical upsidedown 4 on the topside of the 8.

It's 8 84s and 4 48s

[-] hglman@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Its 11 1234567890s

[-] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago

I never write 4 that way, though

[-] Blastasaurus@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Me neither. I also cross my 7's.

[-] Gormadt 2 points 1 year ago

Funny, I do box top 4's but don't cross my 7's

My 9's also have a tail pointing straight down though

[-] NightAuthor@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Arrange a high density led strip in this layout, the individually addressable ones. Then you’ve got a new digit display style
