China retaliated against Donald Trump’s latest tariffs by hiking duties on all US goods, while calling the administration’s actions a “joke” and saying it no longer considers them worth matching.

Beijing will raise tariffs on all US goods from 84% to 125% starting April 12, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday, after the White House clarified that levies on Chinese goods rose to 145% this year.

“Given that American goods are no longer marketable in China under the current tariff rates, if the US further raises tariffs on Chinese exports, China will disregard such measures,” according to the statement.

However, China warned that it will “resolutely counterattack and fight to the end” if the US continues to infringe on its rights and interests. It also said America should take full responsibility for the damage caused by the tariffs.

Tensions between Beijing and Washington have spiraled beyond tit-for-tat tariff exchanges in recent days to impact services and people-to-people ties. Chinese authorities on Thursday moved to cut the number of American films allowed in theaters. Officials also warned citizens against traveling to the US and cautioned students about security risks in “certain states.”

The US and China now trade about $700 billion worth of goods each year. Without a deal to ease tensions, the higher tariffs will mean consumers and businesses on both sides are likely to face rising costs, as they scramble to adjust supply chains and reduce their tariff exposure.

So far, China has refused to cave to Trump’s pressure even as soaring duties are expected to weigh on the economy, with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. economists cutting their 2025 growth forecast to 4% from 4.5%.

President Xi Jinping on Friday made his first public remarks on the escalating trade war, saying China remains confident and unafraid of any “unjustified suppression.”

“One that goes against the world risks being isolated themselves,” Xi told visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Reaffirming China’s stance that there are no winners in a tariff war, Xi added that the country’s development has never relied on the goodwill of others. “No matter how the external environment changes, China will stay confident, remain calm, and focus on managing its own affairs,” he said.

I hope that when Trump removes his tariffs (we all know he'll fold) China just fucking leaves them at 125% to cripple the nazi party.

It's fucking crazy. I hate the CCP, but I'm now rooting for them to cripple Americas economy. Their authoritarian dystopia is preferable to the American nazi parties fascist idiocracy. At least the CCP value science and education. America is on the path to a dead-end death cult, guaranteed to result in ecological collapse.

You want to punish a small group of extremists with megaphones by punishing everyone, including the ones who tried to stop it?

I totally get your exhaustion with US politics, but please remember that people, like myself, don’t deserve to suffer even more because of this assclown.

Just hope that small group of extremists get what’s coming to them in the form of sickness and poverty.

Bonus points for the idiocracy comment, that is very much the vibe nowadays.

[-] prodigalsorcerer@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 week ago

Small group of extremists? One third of Americans voted for this, and another third didn't hate the idea of this enough to vote against it.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 2 points 1 week ago

Not actually 1/3

22.7% of the population voted for him

22.9% of people voted for other candidates (combined)

And then there is the math that we can’t figure out like, how many people are even paying attention and just towing the party line?

So yeah, I consider the overall number of people who blindly support Trump to be at most 20%, which is a minority.

A very loud and obnoxious and embarrassing minority.

100M adults are so ignorant they continuously choose not to vote at all. The D's have supported neoliberalism for the last 40 years, which holds just as much blame for destroying the middle class and spawning fascism. "towing the party line" is a cop out.

While oligarch and capitalist fueled propaganda is to blame, that doesn't change the fact that the US is now a fascist dictatorship. The American people are the only ones who can cut the cancer from their system, and it's obvious to anyone paying attention that the only way that's going to occur is if they feel enough pain to get them off their asses, take direct action, and eliminate fascism by any means necessary.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 4 points 1 week ago

Arguably, voting is made very difficult for many people. So, I am not going to say you’re wrong, but it’s not as easy as just “go vote.” At least we can still speak openly about it and not get tossed in a prison cell and “reeducated.”

That’s next week haha.

[-] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I never remotely implied voting would fix this. The time to vote for change is long gone. I said direct action by any means necessary, and I meant it.

None of this insanity is going to stop until the American people stop it, by force. The sooner they all realize that, the better.

And if the 21st C American is as slow as Trumps re-election indicates... I'm talking relentless boycotts, protests, and general strikes, and if (99% chance that if is a when) the government starts using terrorism to crush the protestors, that is the time when the people are morally and ethically justified to respond with terrorism, in turn. Dictatorships rarely ever fall peacefully.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 1 points 1 week ago

Let’s just shoot the cunt.

[-] rayyy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

it’s obvious to anyone paying attention that the only way that’s going to occur is if they feel enough pain to get them off their asses

The media feeds the ignorant masses non-stop propaganda and scapegoats so they will have someone to blame. Don't expect them to make rational decisions, or wise choices. Our government now discourages learning, and critical thinking is a crime. Furthermore, people who are scrambling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table have no time to understand issues. They seek relief from the stress in entertainment and drugs.

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago

The only winning move was not to elect him. Trump is going to try his damnest to turn us all into sweatshop workers or balkanize us or both. He hates America for prosecuting him. The little people like you and I have already been stepped on and crushed. Its just a delayed lurch.

[-] heavydust@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Maybe next time they'll learn not to vote for nazis. Doing nothing would reward them. Also yes, did you forgot that their president is trying to invade Canada and Greenland FFS?

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 1 points 1 week ago

He’s not actually going to invade. I hate the man, don’t get me wrong, but the only lasting damage he is capable of causing is to the United States.

[-] DougHolland@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The road to today was littered with "Trump is nuts, but he's not nuts enough to do that."

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 1 points 1 week ago

You’re right.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Trump got the majority of the vote. It's not a small group.
The good people of USA is collateral dammage, but it's not because of either China or Canada. It's because the majority of their own people are idiots and assholes.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 1 points 1 week ago

Most people in the world are idiots.

[-] Cpo@lemm.ee 6 points 1 week ago

At this point, the US has little support left in the EU. What you have there is a broken system. The democratic party in the US is center right at best here where I live, they are just "the less evil choice". A two party system simply does not cut it in a diverse country.

So from my point of view: Americans voted for a circus so they get a clown for a president. The ones not voting at all were just complaining about the monkeys.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 2 points 1 week ago

Well, complain about the monkeys and vote or we fall off the unicycle. Whoops, too late.

You’re right, it’s pretty broken. Like our mental health.

That sad moment when you realize that Idiocracy was a prophesy not a comedy

[-] Someone@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

The sad thing is on this current trajectory there will be a day when it actually looks like a hopeful, optimistic view of the future.

[-] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Their authoritarian dystopia is preferable to the American nazi parties fascist idiocracy

No, it really isn't. Neither is preferable. The reason why the American system seems incredibly bad right now is because everyone in the West is accustomed to the kind of liberty we've enjoyed for a long time. So when that changes we see the contrast around us very sharply.

But don't kid yourself that China is better. In fact, the Chinese system is the direction that America is heading towards and starting to emulate.

People in China can't even say a single negative word against Xi, and if they do it online whatever they post gets deleted within minutes and the person gets a knock at the door, often not being heard from ever again.

And that's simply not the case in the US currently. Sure you get the news story about people being turned away at the border for having said something about Trump online, or getting locked up by ICE for a few months (that's an insane reality, don't get me wrong). But ultimately these people are the exception... for now.

At least the CCP value science and education.

The German Nazis also valued Science and education. That doesn't mean anything in the long run.

ps: I know someone will accuse me of violating Godwin's law here, but it's literally relevant since we're talking about actual Nazis

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 53 points 1 week ago

“Given that American goods are no longer marketable in China under the current tariff rates, if the US further raises tariffs on Chinese exports, China will disregard such measures,”

China just casually saying "You are already irrelevant to us now, so have fun, because we dont care anymore."

[-] taladar@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago

Basically dropping a hint that American goods are just not very competitive.

[-] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Sure but can you put a value on all the vacations the executives took by outsourcing our production? Won’t someone think of the private jets?!

[-] Teknikal@eviltoast.org 23 points 1 week ago

I don't think it'll effect China really it's a seriously dangerous play for America though the best case scenario for them is ending up with $2500 phones. Worst case is they lose the reserve currency and end up paying that for a potato.

China will have loads of Countries willing to take up the trading slack the US has created for all of them.

"My tariff is bigger!"

"Actually, mine is bigger."

"Oh yeah? Mine is bigger times infinity!"

At this point, could he please just cut the asinine correlation and whip out his dick already?

No, in the name of God, No! Shall the mushroom pp never see the light of day.

This should be real

The one time he's happy with the size of his hands is when they're gripping his flaccid, withered member and making it look big (or bigger, anyway) by comparison.

[-] glowing_hans@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

We truly live in the best (funniest) timeline.

[-] Sarie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

What's the likelihood of China and trump starting this tariff war to put shell companies in Russia and reroute all goods through it?

[-] febra@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I don't see any of that happening. The amount of money we're talking about here is insane. There's no way you could hide that through shell companies. At that point might as well just start doing business with Russia again without any of these magic tricks.

[-] glowing_hans@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

Russia has not the port infrastructure china has. And that would take decades to build, if Russia can even afford it (it costs more money then they have).
