The same journalist wrote a piece last summer titled “The seeds of this political disaster were sown decades ago”. I can’t read it due to the paywall, but judging from the title, they may not have been completely complacent.

I have to focus on the positives when I can or I’m going to lose it. A lot of leftists have been talking about this for years but we aren’t numerous enough to stop it alone. The NYT can reach a lot of people we can’t, and maybe start to raise their level of consciousness.
