Summary

Donald Trump refused to rule out seeking a third term as president, telling NBC News there are “methods” to do so and emphasizing, “I’m not joking.”

Though the 22nd Amendment bars presidents from serving more than two terms, Trump suggested possible workarounds, including a VP succession plan.

He cited strong poll support and added, “a lot of people want me to do it.”

Allies like Rep. Andy Ogles and Steve Bannon back the idea. Amending term limits would require a complex constitutional process.

The American people have "methods" to remove him should he ever attempt this. And they won't be "joking" either.

I really want to believe you

Lol the American people drive around decrepit cities and believe they live in the best country in the world, while people in Michigan have water that looks like nesquick. Dumbass

What methods? Besides using the Constitution as a toilet paper…and ignoring it. Oh…

A lot of people would like to have Obama back, too. It's weird how these monsters want to set up a specific scenario where Obama cannot run again, but donvict can.

That's weird.

I'm betting far more people want to see Trump strung up by his ankles, maybe he should bow to pressure there as well.

Your last name must start with the first 4 letters T-R-U-M and you must be the most beautiful white man ever known, everyone says so.

[-] sporkler@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I think he should attack Greenland.

Hell, I'd even let him take a pair of chopsticks with him, if he can fit it in his kayak.

If you fuckers can’t see the writing on the wall, you never will. Sitting on a keyboard complaining is not going to stop this. And HUGE warning to Canadians. GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

That’s the 12th amendment. No, he can’t run for VP and let the POTUS quit

The only legal method of doing this would be repealing the 22nd amendment.

Also, he’ll be dead by then. He’s obese and almost 80.

How have we gotten to the point of just hoping his poor health will solve this problem? Assassination is crazy and shouldn't be a solution to anything, but I just wish the whole country was not as brainwashed/apathetic to avoid this problem in the first place.

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't call it crazy at this point.

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

There’s not really anything you can do besides vote. That and protest

There's no doubt the 22nd Amendment would disqualify him, the only question is what happens when he's disqualified? If the Supreme Court goes the same direction the majority went on the Colorado ballot case, they'd say it's up to Congress to enforce it. Now there's good reason for assuming they won't say the same exact thing here, but the same cop-out instinct that the 6 Republicans have had with Trump will still be there. Maybe they'll just say it's up to the voters to not elect him again and leave it at that.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

The 22nd amendment was written poorly, and prohibits someone from being elected into the office.

Terrifying fact: the Speaker of the House is third in line, and doesn't actually have to be a member of Congress. If the VP and President both leave office without a new VP being appointed, the Speaker of the House assumes the Presidency, bypassing both the 12th and 22nd amendments.

He'll start a war, internally or externally and use that as an excuse to block elections. Probably takes Zelenski as an example, no elections during wartime...

Or he'll do a Putin, all election preparations go into a blender, real opponents are disqualified for arbitrary reasons, force his own name on the ballot then declare himself a winner.

Or... as he keeps throwing around, make sure there is voter fraud, hide it 'till it leaks then just proclaim the win/fraudulent elections and stay in power.

I don't believe the us has what Ukraine has. Could be wrong but i dont think elections can be suspended during wartime. He also doesn't have the power to declare war. It's why the us hasn't technically been in a war since ww2 or korea (I forget what the last official war was)

However it is looking like he is trying already to throw the election process out the window. Likely so it's easier to rig would be my guess

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The issue in Ukraine is twofold.

The country is under martial law, which forbids elections and 20% of the country's electorate is under foreign occupation in wartime. Thus poisoning any election result because 1/5th of the territory's people didnt get to vote.

the US presumably, would not have the second problem

[-] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago

“Presumably” is carrying that sentence.

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The only scenario where US territory comes under occupation is one where the US is in complete and total anarchy, where their Navy isnt stopping European, Chinese, or Russian forces from landing on its own shores. Any other scenario, North America is safe from Overseas invasion.

even in a war scenario, Mexico and Canada aren't going to try to occupy American territory.

I suppose the only other scenario would be if there was a successionist movement that tried to leave the Union.

true, there is the Maduro Method, Putin Method, Orban Method, Erdogan, Jinping....

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

There are "legal" methods for doing anything. The question is if it is ethical, sane, not authoritarian.

I sincerely hope he dies of a McDonalds coronary today.
