"As with hit tunes and hit pictures and hit entertainments, fashion rushes in to fill the vacuum in our senses created by technological displacements. Perhaps that is why it seems to be the expression of such a colossal preference while it lasts. James Joyce gives it a key role in Finnegans Wake in his section on the Prankquean. The Prankquean is the very expression of war and aggression. In her life, clothing is weaponry: "I'm the queen of the castle and you're the dirty rascal." In the very opening line of Finnegans Wake — "riverrun, past Eve and Adam's..."— Joyce thus indicates the reversal of nature that has taken place since the fall of man. It is not the world of Adam and Eve, but one in which there is priority of Eve over Adam. Clothing as weaponry had become a primary social factor. Clothing is anti-environmental, but it also creates a new environment. It is also anti- the elements and anti-enemies and anti- competitors and anti-boredom." - Page 21, 1968 "War and Peace in the Global Village", Marshall McLuhan

June 2023

This might help people ? Not sure if directly related.

If you don't know what you're talking about why did you post this?

If you don’t know what you’re talking about why did you post this?

How do we know what the woman in London yesterday is specifically referencing? She was at the US Embassy, so it must be Trump related?

Her sign seems professionally designed and printed.

That's my point: you are flinging shit at the wall and shrugging. What are YOU trying to say?

[-] RoundSparrow@lemm.ee 5 points 9 hours ago

you are flinging shit at the wall and shrugging.

You think Canadian professor Marshall McLuhan is "shit" to fling? Canada is supporting Ukraine. I really don't get your line of questioning here as a moderator.

Last chance: What are YOU trying to say?

[-] RoundSparrow@lemm.ee 2 points 8 hours ago

What am I trying to say? A woman in London yesterday was protesting Putin/Russia to support Ukraine. She is using symbolism of clothing. University of Toronto professor Marshall McLuhan described women using clothing against enemies in a 1968 book for deeper understanding of how she is fighting against Putin.

Thank you for at least trying to answer the question. In the future it is polite to clarify your post when someone says they don't get it, and rude to ignore them. @tisktisk@piefed.social

You were being a massive dick.

Can someone eli5 what we're lookin at here? I don't get it at all

A blowhard obfuscating a very simple and commonly understood message: clothes matter. They communicate your status, ideology, and alignments. The recent fiasco in the White House where Zelenskyy was criticized for not wearing a suit coupled with the protest image depicted above strongly suggests a commonly heard refrain around these parts:

This is a war between classes. Oligarchs/Plutocrats vs Workers.

And consequently Zelenskyy identifying with the working class is the real reason Trump is withdrawing support.

There's more to it I'm sure, but frankly, I can't be bothered when people vomit word salads instead of just saying what they mean. It is more important for them to 'sound' intelligent, than communicate their message so I give them what they want :P

@Burstar @tisktisk

There is more to it. They needed something to hit him with. With Obama it was a tan suit and with Zelensky it was his unofficial military uniform.

Had he been wearing a suit they would have gone after him for wearing a fancy suit while his people were dying. A tan one at that.

The top image puts that into perspective. Because the answer to her question is off course no, they would not suddenly care and take action. The suit, or lack, thereof is inconsequential.

Well I hope you liked this Zelensky salad of mine.

[-] Burstar@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago

It's a fair point. I agree they would have attacked Zelensky no matter what, but IMO when Zelensky handed them their ass they fell back to core principles and so unsurprisingly resulted to classist insults.

Regardless, I'm really not that invested in the topic. My issue was the OP was hiding behind quotation marks instead of saying what they wanted to say and sealioning instead of explaining when people asked for clarification. My interpretation being so off mark itself shows an explaination was warranted.

[-] thijsje@social.vivaldi.net 1 points 6 hours ago

@Burstar sorry sealioning? What do you mean by that?

[-] Burstar@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Refusing to answer questions. Edit: trolling would probably be a better word.

[-] WraithGear@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

Her question is rhetorical. Because the answer is of course Russia would still be killing Ukrainians she is arguing against the US right. And Zelenskyy is right to not wear a suit as it shows solidarity to who really matters. If the argument is that the situation could have been avoided if he just wore a suit. Then the administration is obviously lying, and never intended to support him.

[-] easily3667@lemmus.org 1 points 7 hours ago

What the fuck are you talking about? What does any of your post have to do with the working class? You know these same people went after Obama for wearing the wrong color suit too, right?

[-] Burstar@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 hours ago

If you don't understand how criticizing not wearing a suit relates to working class I don't think I can help you.

Going after someone for not wearing the right colour suit is similar in nature: 'you are not one of us'.

James Joyce apparently wrote the post title and description underneath. If you can figure out Ulysses, this post should be decipherable.

[-] tisktisk@piefed.social 6 points 19 hours ago

stellar--more gratuitous name-dropping things I also don't know. Kinda sad way of just answering, 'no' but since it isn't explicit enough...I read the title and description 3 times and don't know what I'm look at here. What does suits have to do with the current conflicts?

Now I have to ask of your non-answer, who is Ulysses? And please don't answer with riddles or trivial info that does the opposite of clarifying the content if possible. (Large ask, I know)

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 7 points 18 hours ago

Alright, party pooper.

I don't really know what this thing is about. I am guessing from context it relates to Zelenskyy not wearing a suit, which he started when Russia invaded. That became news again recently because some shitheel sycophant in the Whitehouse thought he could lecture the Ukrainian President about how disrespectful that was.

This whole post is incredibly opaque. It also references James Joyce. Joyce was a writer famous for being difficult to understand, and Ulysses is one of his novels.

James Joyce apparently wrote the post title and description underneath

University of Toronto professor Marshall McLuhan's words.

[-] RoundSparrow@lemm.ee 3 points 17 hours ago

The post has a link to Wikipedia about 1968 book by Canadian professor.

"War and Peace in the Global Village is a 1968 book by Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore. It contains a collage of images and text that illustrates the effects of electronic media and new technology on man. Marshall McLuhan used James Joyce's Finnegans Wake as a major inspiration for this study of war throughout history as an indicator as to how war may be conducted in the future"

That future is now.
