Canada will join the EU by 2028

[-] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 days ago

I'm all for it.

[-] LeFantome@programming.dev 7 points 4 days ago

Our telcos would block it for sure

[-] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 22 points 4 days ago

I will happily burn down a Telus office building if it means entry into the EU.

I hear Asia is seeking rare earth minerals and energy

Didn't we recently sign a major contract with Japan for natural gas? On top of the new natural gas facility we're building in BC?

Though I suspect that this relationship will only be good for a decade or two, becoming the #1 supplier of natural gas to eastern Asia will be good both from an economic and political stance, as that's the area that is likely to have the biggest economic impact on the world aside from India over the next half century.

More trade with EU is great. All for it. Trade with China and friendly relations/trade with Russia is needed because these are countries that will help stand up against US. Getting a commitment for next agricultural harvests to export to China/asia or EU is a critical win to displace US agriculture.

Trade with Russia? WTF does Russia offer but trolls and BS

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Unless you think Ukraine can stand up to US more than Russia, it's the wrong side to back. Caring more about Ukraine than Canada is normal for downvoters.

How about one doesn't oppose Nazi B by siding with Nazi A

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

The real evil direct threats of nazi B, vs the reasonable right to not be diminished that side A has asserted, and nazi B fabricated to get you to side with nazi B all this time?

[-] LeFantome@programming.dev 12 points 4 days ago

Um, yes. I would rather ally with Ukraine, regardless of who else my friends and enemies are.

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Yeah I'd rather die fighting than fight alongside people I'd like to fight.

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

Maybe it's all Europeans downvoting me. Keep in mind that very extensive US led propaganda is responsible for your hatreds.

For Canada, and what should be Europeans too, the phantom threat of Russia should not be weighed as a real threat. The direct tangilbe threat of war by US should weigh very heavily.

If the downvotes are not all from your propaganda handlers, you don't have time to be too shocked to lose your fantasized hatred (direct cause of your economic and political underperformance/destruction since Ukraine war) in order to deal with the real hatred towards you, that comes from the same assholes who've be propagandizing you all along.

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

That's a lot of words for a ruski propaganda bot.

[-] wandermind@sopuli.xyz 7 points 4 days ago

As a European, I don't need US propaganda to know what Russia has done to my people and other European peoples not just in recent history but for centuries. Recent Russian actions are simply a continuation of the same. Their excuses change but their actions don't.

Let me get this straight. Canada a country already over burdened with regulations with a faltering economy wants to join the EU an other over regulated market with faltering economy? No thanks

[-] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Based on what the US has been doing over the past month, I'm not so sure your trend will continue like this. And in any case, the US is at best an unreliable trading partner, and at worst an enemy of Canada, so we need new trading partners. The EU seems like as good as any.

[-] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 4 days ago

Probably by fair trading without US oligarchs and its unhinged financial sector sucking up all profit derived from their respective countries. And hopefully with more equal wealth distribution not completely derailing nice infographics. Because the one above is utterly useless if what you care for actually is quality of life, not just numbers going up.

[-] Dearche@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

We already have a major free trade agreement with the EU, and we're not burdened by their regulations on most resources that we want to export to them anyways.

This is different from those people who are talking about actually joining the EU. We're just shipping our raw resources (or preferably refined resources).

And frankly speaking, a lot of the US's growth comes from the fact that they've been taking advantage of their legacy infrastructure like 60 year old power plants, and the fact that we sell them oil and minerals at costs much lower than the world average. We redirect a ton of that to the EU and other countries, and the US's growth with drastically slow down while giving us huge growth as the profit margin of our products will rise substantially.

EU might not be as rich as the US, but it is still quite rich, and isn't about to collapse under its own weight like China. As economies go, they are literally the next best thing after the US, and their reliability makes them far more attractive partners for the next half century.
