The company that oversees the Domino’s Pizza brand in Russia said it will file for bankruptcy there, signaling a definitive end to its operations in that country nearly 18 months after President Vladimir Putin launched an unprovoked invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

DP Eurasia, the franchisee for Domino’s in Europe and Asia, cited unspecified business challenges in Russia, where it operated more than 100 restaurants. The U.S.-based Dominos Pizza has said it cut off financial support for the Russian business in December 2022.

A bankruptcy filing is now forthcoming, the company said.

Fuck Domino's. They stayed for a fucking year and half. I hope they lost tons of money. Fucking vile sub-human shitbags.

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 71 points 1 year ago

I mean, to be fair, they stopped all financial support to Russia in 2022 (still took too long). This was just a pre-existing licensing agreement. I doubt they could’ve revoked it. Most people don’t think to put a “must stop operating in any country that commits war crimes” clause in their licensing deals

[-] SupraMario@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

This is almost like being pissed at Boeing because russia stole their planes.

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

These things are not related. Domino's had the ability to leave (despite any imagined contracts) this entire time. They chose to stay in hopes of continued profit.

They chose money over human life, which is the expected behavior of sub-humans. Russia did not steal from them. Russia did not imprison or threaten them. They chose to stay for profit because they are villainous shitstains. Do not defend them. They neither need nor want your defense (unless it brings them profit).

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

They chose to stay in hopes of continued profit.

I hate to spoil this for you but the only reason any brand or corp left Russia was because they were afraid of reduced profits (sanctions notwithstanding). End of story. That just happens to line up with the majority of people's sentiments which is "Fuck Russia." Don't confused morality with perfectly timed greed.

Fair enough. Still pretty angry about it.

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 38 points 1 year ago

Fucking vile sub-human shitbags.

Sir, this is a pizza place that hires mostly teenagers. There are much greater evils to get sweaty about. This one isn't it.

[-] Holomew@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

They actually stopped taking orders, it just took this long to finish their deliveries.

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Here it is. The embodiment of the example I gave (before I even saw this lmao) in my responses to the idiots down voting.

Stop attaching morality to stupid fucking brands, people. The capitalists fucking hate you.

[-] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 year ago

You misread the article. It's not Domino's, it's the franchise owner who operates Domino's in Europe.

The title is somewhat misleading

[-] ares35@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

guess they ran out of lube and could no longer deliver in 30 minutes or less.

[-] Dinodicchellathicc@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Im gonna be honest man, you sound like a total tard. It's just pizza, i swear it has no effect on the war.

Like it or not pizza guys are people too

Did it take them that long to figure out the bribes needed to create a subsidiary to continue doing business there without using the name anymore?

Please pull out of Germany too. I want Hallo Pizza back.

There can be no ethical consumption under capitalism.

[-] YeetPics@mander.xyz 10 points 1 year ago

he typed, sure of his worldview and naive to the hypocrisy of consuming electricity which powered the personal computer he bought and didn't forge himself from silicon and copper.

[-] Espi@kbin.social 19 points 1 year ago

Ah yes, I forget I cannot criticize a thing I partake into in hopes it improves.

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

a thing I partake in

More like a thing we're all forced into but yeah, the sentiment is correct.

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Do you think that I think that I don't consume? I just don't attach morality to it, e.g. "Don't buy Domino's because they're still in Russia over a year after the war" or insert any virtue signaling "protest" like Bud Light etc.

[-] iHUNTcriminals@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

While I agree ...I would also like to say "smoke it if you got it". That's how I justify my ipad anyway....

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 6 points 1 year ago

Where and when can there be ethical consumption?

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Find me an economic system where increasing profits at the expense of everything else isn't the only goal. Probably that one.

[-] severien@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I lived in one which ostensibly did not prioritize profits and it sucked. We didn't even have pizza at all, no joke. Pizza wasn't part of the five-year plan, after all.

I bet there is something in between Late Stage Capitalism USA and past soviet "communism" where workers aren't being exploited.

Edit: how are you liking America and the pizza? Just assuming you've moved somewhere that prioritizes profits so you can enjoy them and the pizza.

[-] severien@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

From the systems we've seen the European / Nordic model seems like the best compromise that has been tried so far.

I like pizza very much, thanks for asking. In general, I liked US, the natural beauty and diversity of the West is stunning. I also liked the vibe of the people. Public transportation sucks for the most part. Fortunately I didn't have to move, the communist regime "moved".

You just steal your food from farmers then?

[-] _wintermute@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I just don't attach morality to shitty brands or corporations. It's okay we don't need to act like they are "on our side" because inherently they are the ones exploiting us. They cater to the market, not a sense of morality. Acting like they actually care, or have some sort of moral compass is just sticking your head in the sand against the irrefutable evidence of the capitalist hellscape we live in.

Wow. Really quickly done there. /s

These companies are taking even longer:

https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-1000-companies-have-curtailed-operations-russia-some-remain

As in they are still operating as if nothing has happened.

Companies like:

  • Braun
  • British Telecom
  • Carl's Jr
  • Cloudflare
  • Honor
  • Kawasaki
  • Lacoste
  • Makita -New Yorker
  • Patreon
  • Riot Games
  • Sbarro
  • Tupperware
  • Valve
  • Yamaha
  • ZTE

There are a ton more that simply suspended new investment but are still operating.

Sbarro should be allowed to continue in Russia. I've never eaten at a restaurant chain more demoralizing than that.

[-] SeaJ@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Sbarro's to the front lines!

[-] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Lol, ZTE is a Chinese company. They are 100% not pulling out.

If Domino’s Pizza can end their presence in Russia, when will the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund?

Didn’t they promise to pull out their 51 investments by February 2022?

[-] saltesc@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago
