We all keep saying that AI is ruining the platform... Well, Google and YouTube have doubled down on AI slop. They want creators to use ai as much as possible to churn out content that they can better monetize... they also want to train on our videos so they can create their own ai influencers... it's dystopian.

When I click a video, even if it's a topic I'm interested in, if I hear that AI voice, I immediately click off. No engagement. No comments.

Text to speech (TTS) has come a long way, even open source projects.

I've recently been using TTS to read pdfs to me while I do yardwork and its not super easy to tell just by the voice that its not a human. Biggest issue seems to be with math formulas.

In a year it will be hard to tell the difference unless they read something that a human would have skipped.

I was aware of the AI replies, but not of the AI video inspiration tool. That is depressing.

I think the best way forward is to talk to creators and get them to move platforms, but I don't know what to recommend based on available tools, revenue share, and ease of use.

Is PeerTube the only one that fits these criteria?

Nebula is an alternative, it is creator-owned and against AI

[-] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 month ago

Invite-only, I'm afraid.

[-] osaerisxero@kbin.melroy.org 9 points 1 month ago

Peertube does not meet those criteria. YouTube is a functioning monopoly in its space.

Peertube is great as a technology. Works very well. At the moment, it doesn't have the network effect, but its growing bit by bit naturally. Unfortunately, creators would have to work with the instance admins for monetization. Or create their own.

With patreon/other sources of income, it may be less or an issue. Inadvertently Youtube de-monetizing videos and creators coming up with other ways of making money means their platform becomes less and less relevant.

I hope creators will move slowly more and more to PeerTube. I think that is the only way.

[-] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

And/Or new ones start using it.

[-] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 1 month ago

Yes of course.

YouTube deserves to die

Google's killing YT in a few ways. Yeah, that's one of them.

Creators should organize, I can't do anything as a viewer other than watch them elsewhere if they make the option available.

I understand making it so you can see when someone has used AI stuff to help create the content but pushing people to actually create content using AI is another thing.

The sad thing is I've seen people 'enjoy' AI content and it sucks with so many people actually wanting to create content and good content at that now being pushed further down the path for AI content the death of YouTube might come sooner.

All i'm hoping is that people move to other platforms such as PeerTube (If they ever fix discovering new videos).
