Is this.... Is this a post from vegan's being all like "omg we be discriminated against, look we are the same" when literally all the others are actually very marginalized very threatend groups? I'm trans and this meme is the same kinda feels of PETA saying there like trans people on how horrible it is, and getting hunted down. When in fact my whole life I have never seen any vegan get denied basic services to the extent of any marginalized people In my decades of living. It's always them wanting to take over Marginalized communities and make it all about them (in my experiences I have had)

Yes there are religions that have vegan type restrictions, there are trans people who are vegans. That's all ok.

It just doesn't feel equitable to me trying to place something someone chooses to do by extreme marginalized communities that are often hunted down (in some places literally hunted down)

As always it's ok to be vegan, or vegetarian. And I get the reason for it. But doing this kinda thing just makes me feel like how PETA is and try to redirect all the attention to them.

isnt this so disrespectful? i know she says “im not saying they face the same discrimination” but… media literacy: 99% of people who view this juxtaposition will come to the conclusion she kind of is saying that.

sunshine if you are reading this, just like… make better memes. you have noble intentions but wow this isn’t the way to do it lol

I’m not saying the groups face the same level of discrimination just that they need to be treated better. I’m trans too, I know the severity of the situation.

The reason why PETA gets a lot of negative media attention is because of the propaganda from the right-wing political entity Center for Organizational Research and Education slandering the most effective animal rights organization by twisting the facts and spreading misinformation.

The Center for Organizational Research and Education (CORE), formerly the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) and prior to that the Guest Choice Network, is an American non-profit entity founded by Richard Berman. It describes itself as "dedicated to protecting consumer choices and promoting common sense."

Projects and campaigns of CORE include Humane Watch, a watchdog of the Humane Society of the United States; the Environmental Policy Alliance, which criticizes environmental activists; and Activist Facts, a site dedicated to tracking tax-exempt nonprofits.

The organization defends the alcohol, meat, and tobacco industries and has been critical of organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Experts on non-profit law have questioned the validity of the group's non-profit status in The Chronicle of Philanthropy and other publications, while others, including political commentator Rachel Maddow and author Michael Pollan, have treated the group as an entity that specializes in astroturfing.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

These groups face a lot of attacks from the publicly unfortunately.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 10 points 5 days ago

all but one of them is under the constant threat of murder babes

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

That’s true that vegans are safer in that regard but they do face threats and police brutality from protesting.

A woman in London Ontario (Canada) has bumper stickers on her car that indicate her vegan choices. These bumper stickers include expressions such as: “If you love animals you don't eat them.” "Be kind, be vegan." And “Friends, not food.” One sticker shows a picture of a dog and a cow, asking the question: “Why love one but eat the other?” As a result of these bumper stickers, she has been yelled at, aggressively run off the road, and had meat and other objects thrown at her car. She is worried not only for herself but for her children. Regardless of your own diet and choices, we can likely agree that this is a sad state of affairs.

thank you for sharing nevertheless i do find this post to be in very poor taste. there is a level of disrespect to comparing people groups who face systemic murder with a few individuals who have faced harassment.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago

The post just says protect these people not that they face the same level of discrimination.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 7 points 5 days ago

i’m aware, yet i find this to be disrespectful

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

I’m transgender and Ukrainian and so screw off with this “but it’s disrespectful claim”

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 8 points 5 days ago

no, it’s important to me that you know i find this to be a hurtful post, even if unintentionally, so i won’t be dropping my claim

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago

Veganism is always seen as “disrespectful”

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 6 points 5 days ago

here you equivocate (assume to be the same) two things. to clarify, i find your post to be disrespectful

i have the utmost respect for veganism and all vegans :)

I think they're covered by the top iirc but don't quote me

[-] TheAlbatross 12 points 6 days ago

You absolute fuck I was setting myself up for a similar joke. Couldn't you have just said "I think its for vegans" or something so I could have replied "okay, but what's the flag for bottoms? They need protecting."

[-] motor_spirit@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

Fuck dude my bad, let's try this again from the tops

Discrimination against vegans is a real thing, there are instances where individuals were treated worse, denied housing and work opportunities all for simply having different beliefs. You should consider reading these articles on the topic:

Does Veganphobia Exist?

  • Many people may assume veganism is an easy choice, driven by fashion and fads.
  • Veganism often has a foundation deeply rooted in personal ethics and beliefs.
  • Vegans are often severely stigmatized and may find themselves rejected by mainstream society.
  • Our spiritual and ethical beliefs can be just as powerful as organized religion.

Vegans Suffer From Stigma

There are many circumstances in which vegans are treated or considered worse than nonvegans, both in the private and the public sphere, either due to the presence of a bias against them (‘vegaphobia’) or for structural reasons. For instance, vegans sometimes suffer harassment, have issues at their workplace, or find little vegan food available. In many cases they are forced to contribute to, or to participate in, animal exploitation against their will when states render it illegitimate to oppose or refuse to support some uses of animals. For the most part this remains socially invisible. Vegans, however, often recognize this as a form of discrimination against them. But they seldom campaign against it, as they regard it as a consequence of another and more important discrimination, i.e. speciesist discrimination against nonhuman animals. If this is correct, discrimination against vegans can be characterized as a form of second-order discrimination, that is, discrimination against those who oppose another (first-order) form of discrimination. If speciesism really is unjustified and discriminatory, then discrimination against vegans will always be discriminatory and unjustified too. But even if our current attitudes towards animals were justified there would be strong reasons to claim that vegans do suffer several forms of private and public discrimination that are unjustified.

Are you being serious? People choose to be vegan. Don’t put vegans on the same level as groups that are being persecuted, that’s not cool.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 days ago

I’m part of the 3 groups above and If you saw the harassment vegans got firsthand you’re wouldn’t be saying that.

[-] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 21 points 5 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I am a vegan, and not part of any of the other groups.

Vegans don't get picked on very much, unless you try to pick a fight

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

The vegan communities are often brigaded and there’s so much slander against the community even from progressive folks admittedly.

[-] SayJess 15 points 6 days ago
[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.

[-] SayJess 10 points 5 days ago

lol sure thing there buddy 🫡

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The carnist bias in full display. I never said that being vegan is the same as being transgender, Palestinian or Ukrainian. I just said that all the communities need to be protected. Anything to attack the message, “trying to lecture others”. People often nod in agreement with the progressive points but god forbid that the meme has a pro-vegan message, there are always some selfish individuals who come out of the woodwork to attack it.

I’m done talking to a troll.

Vegans have a moral believe system like how the muslims and jews do. Most people say that we should provide Halal and Kosher options but then flat out refuse on providing a vegan option. They excuse their discrimination using the flimsy excuse “it’s not a religion” no it is a belief system that should be accommodated for.

And the fact that people cheer on cops silencing and stumping on the human rights of vegan activists through the form of aggressive removals of peaceful protesters, trumped up charges.

These are examples of blatant discrimination.

I’m blocking you because you’re an unserious person who cannot see past their own selfishness.

[-] SayJess 13 points 5 days ago

My lord you are quite sensitive. The only issue I have with vegans is when they take their activism a bit too far. Like right now. No one is discriminating against you here. Vegans don’t need any special consideration in order to live. Again, it’s a choice.

I just re-read your reply and saw that you’re blocking me. lol I hope you reported me as well. 🙃

[-] TheAlbatross 8 points 6 days ago

Buddy, I'm making jokes on the internet, I ain't saying one thing or another about vegans.

[-] streetfestival@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago

I love everything about this, and I just learned there's a vegan flag (yay!), but the vegan flag looks like an email icon to me 🧐

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago

The vegan flag is gorgeous as it stands for the compassion towards others. Hopefully we will see more being flown all around the world and an emoji made for it.

It does look a letter haha
