How to have the whole train car to yourself.

[-] whodatdair 67 points 3 weeks ago

def looks like a handwritten 00:00:01 countdown clock on it lmfao

[-] Gamera8ID@discuss.online 39 points 3 weeks ago

It would be much simpler to use an external battery pack, like this.

[-] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 22 points 3 weeks ago

Mfs out here really trying to get shot by law enforcement lmao

[-] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Lol, probably not going to wait for cops, just gonna rush them before the bomb gets set off.

[-] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 weeks ago

As a human being living in the real world, that's a terrible idea. Please never take it out of the house.

[-] unphazed@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Went on a tour of an airport (small international one). Security told us they get weird scares all the time. A guy had a paperweight novelty grenade in his bag. Crazy part was they knew him-he worked there for 30 years and had recently retired. Dude missed his flight and had to answer looooots of questions. FBI didn't clear him for travel until a month later. They said it wasn't a prank either, guy just didn't think anything of it.

That's... a lot of batteries for one tablet. Where are the other 18,647?

[-] Nelots@lemm.ee 18 points 3 weeks ago

That thing in the back isn't a tablet, its 18,647 batteries in a metal trench coat.

[-] wabafee@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago
[-] JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca 44 points 3 weeks ago

Cool, but I'm not seeing a link to the tutorial.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 30 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

If you already opened it to install this, why didn't you just buy an actual replacement from China?

ETA:

This is (probably) a Blackview Tab 12 Pro

I found a proper replacement ranging in price from $10 to $30 depending on if you wanted a Stateside store and faster ship or willing to wait for AliExpress.

This is a solution in search of a problem

[-] teije9 36 points 3 weeks ago

but replacing the battery doesn't mean you get to have a tablet with replaceable batteries

[-] Ajen@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 weeks ago

It proves you already had a tablet with replaceable batteries...

[-] BigPotato@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Replaceable vs "easily replaceable"

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago

I guess we could use the term "swappable" here as a distinction.

[-] BigPotato@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'll accept that compromise. Now I'm more curious if the batteries are hot swappable though. It'd probably cause some chaos with the battery indicator but just making me think...

If you get more likes on your comment I am willing to test this

The logic here is astounding.

Ig, but you can expect a Li-ion to last about 2-3 years, it's not that much of a chore to open it up every 3 years, especially after the first time

[-] pufferfisherpowder@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe op really likes to carry spare batteries instead of, you know, a power pack?

[-] teije9 2 points 3 weeks ago

why should you open it up again, instead of just charging/replacing the repalceabke batteries

[-] apemint@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Because they're ugly, bulky and inconvenient as fuck.

[-] teije9 2 points 3 weeks ago

okay but who doesn't want a tablet with replaceable batteries

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Context I live in a country with an unreliable postal service and shit currency. Also batteries were free from an old power bank

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

This is the best hack I have ever done!

[-] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It is very unique for sure, I don't think I've ever seen this done on a tablet before!

I worry about being able to take the tablet outside the house without getting the bomb squad called on you, but I suppose you could maybe 3D print a cover for it, maybe even integrate a kickstand for that extra functionality lol

[-] Krudler@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago

Why spend $12 on an easily replaceable battery when you can just use $11.97 worth of 18650's and six hours of your life?

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Free batteries from an old power bank...

[-] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 15 points 3 weeks ago

Pretty awesome hack to extend life on devices that are otherwise meant to become e-waste. Kudos!

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Thank you that was the idea, In the missing tutorial I explain that I used batteries from a power bank with a broken usb. So yeah re-using stuff, this tablet should last 10 more years at least! https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/

[-] Imhotep@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

what I often miss on a laptop or a tablet ?

A handle.

It's also a great place to put batteries.

The Thinkpads understood that, but then forgot

[-] DrGunjah@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

this looks more like "how to set your house on fire"

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 21 points 3 weeks ago

Only to people who say such things

[-] db2@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

It would work fine. Could use a cover.

[-] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 weeks ago

the only difference between this and the internal one is that its more sucepptible to piercing damage, but the contraption itself isnt any more inherently dangerous conpared to the battery in the tablet itself.

if youre worried about house fires at all one shouldnt even use lithium ion batteries period.

[-] Thorry84@feddit.nl 5 points 3 weeks ago

Well except for the exposed contacts from the holder. These types of holders are designed to be on the inside of things and not exposed. Bridging one side to the other would be a fire and explosion risk. OP needs to put a cover over it to be safe, or at least some kapton tape over the exposed contacts.

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

You are correct - I forgot to link to the tutorial page on my website where I'm pretty sure I explained that I'm fully aware of the risk and nobody should do this

[-] Turret3857@infosec.pub 5 points 3 weeks ago

As long as it's all wired correctly it should be fine.

[-] rovingnothing29@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

I did this last year with an e-reader

[-] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago
[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago

18650's? Those are a dime a dozen. Unless you want the actual company that made those specific ones. If that's the case, I can't help you.

[-] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago

Well brand does matter, as their specs have been widely incorrect to sell cheap batteries to make them seem premium.

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 4 points 3 weeks ago

I mean you can always just get LG's. Pretty hard to go wrong with them as long as they're official

[-] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, Samsung, LG, Sony if you can get them. I'm very "anal" about 18650/21700 battery safety. I have seen perfectly brand new cheap ones just vent for no good reason and it aint pretty.

[-] tomjuggler@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Geez did I not link to the tutorial here? That's what happens when you're in a hurry. https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/

Also, no I don't take it out of the house - and the batteries are from an old power bank so essentially free.
