Keeping !showsandmovies@lemm.ee alive

Trying to help !patientgamers@sh.itjust.works to get more activity. There was !oldgamers@lemmy.world started a few days ago. I suggested the mod to join patientgamers, they were not convinced. Let's see how it goes.

!expectationvsreality@lemm.ee got a nice boost with a post too, that seems a community that can be easy to grow.

I wish there was a wiki here, or a better way to keep "long running" information. I can pin posts, but that's not always the best, and it feels like "This post is more important than everything else". Maybe I should spin one up sometime

Linked posts in the sidebar kind of works. Embedded wiki would be great indeed

[-] FrostyTrichs@walledgarden.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Sidebar links are arguably better anyway. Pinned posts don't always federate that way beyond the instance of the mod doing it. There are so many quirky things about running and moderating federated communities on the current version of Lemmy.

[-] darakan@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

Wait, pinned posts don't federate properly? That's very interesting.

[-] FrostyTrichs@walledgarden.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

Try pinning something and then checking it from another instance. My experience has been very inconsistent, especially when using an account on a different instance than the community is on.

Linked posts are crap, because they link to a specific instance and you cannot participate unless you are on that instance or search the /c for the topic on your home instance yourself. At least i have not found a way to link to posts in a way that keeps you on your instance like with linking (distant) communities.

https://lemmyverse.link/ ?

Also, for wiki style information (so that people would just read), it should be okay to link to another instance

[-] AchtungDrempels@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Alright, did not know about lemmyverse.link, that is an OK workaround. Thanks.

You are welcome

I'm starting to get a feel of what works (=gets popular) and what doesn't in !artdesign@jlai.lu, but haven't curated what I'm posting yet. Still working on the megathread that will (hopefully) list all the art communities on Lemmy

!esports@lemmy.zip is single handedly being carried by OP 😂 btw @Blaze@sopuli.xyz if you're interested in being mod in there I'll appoint you

!lemmyvision@jlai.lu will maybe return for the end of the year, or maybe remain on standby for Lemmyvision 2

Not my communities but every now and then I try posting in !boardgames@sopuli.xyz ; !filmpostersporn@lemmy.world ; !map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz to help them get more exposure

Thanks for offering, but I'm good thanks 😄 also I only follow LoL, so I guess until next tournament I won't post much

Next year's introduction to Fearless Draft is going to make competition really interesting !

Trying to make !graybeard@lemmy.cafe a thing, but so far allbymyself.gif. Was sort of looking to have it as a sysadminy discussion thing, but lemmy is too small for it, yet, so it's just a bunch of links to The Register, Drew DeVault and a couple others.

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago

The name might not directly say what this is about, which might limit the chances of someone stumbling upon it. Maybe !sysadmin@lemmy.cafe would make it more clear?

[-] Illecors@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 week ago

Maybe, but then I'm not aiming for generic sysadmin. I was hoping to get true graybeards to share their experience(s). It'll get there, I think, but it will take a lot more than just a few tens of thousands of users to get enough people from the crowd.

I might have to. Feels weird advertising it, though. Maybe it's just all in my head

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago

It's really okay with how difficult community discoverability is

[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Good luck, seriously.

As a beard (long past the pfy stage, still have a ways to go till gray status) I understand the desire to avoid the type of basic shit that seems to show up in sysadmin communities now. Way too much "I'm the only IT guy so they gave me a fancy title, but I'm doing Tier 2 helpdesk work at best" flying around in the admin spaces lately. The non admin spaces are even worse, with regular "sky is falling" articles about Windows features that are disable-able with a single click in a top level settings menu.

That said, if the space gets popular, it's going to attract all types, including the newbies with inflated egos. Kind of a catch 22. You need it to be popular to attract any users, but you're trying to cater to a specific subset.

I'd start with filling out the community description/sidebar, myself. Beyond that, you've got a new subscriber here.

[-] Illecors@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 week ago

Thanks for the feedback!

[-] FundMECFSResearch 1 points 1 week ago

Perhaps add a community description? Most people don’t know what greybeard means.
