Is there a phrase to describe someone latching on to a cause not out of a good faith desire to help it, but to use its rhethoric as a shield in order to attack as many people as their typing speed will allow?

[-] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

at this point, why not setup your own instance + communities so you can do whatever you please?

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

What would be the point of that? I'm not interested of going on a banhammer powertrip or create an echo-chamber. I can freely post on .ml since it's not ran by Zionists.

Aside from a few Tankie.World communities there would be no point to making my own instance.

[-] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I am suggesting it so you aren’t the one having your posts removed. You would be in control of the content you allow rather than beholden to others

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

I'm not interested in controlling posts. I am interested in turning people against the Genocidal apartheid regime of israel.

Creating an echo chamber would be defeat that point as nobody who doesn't already dislike israel would post there.

[-] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

You don’t have to create an echo chamber though. Thats the benefit of having your own instance and community.

I had a look. Seems like a quite old video (11 months ago), but it is an official MEP speech as the European Parliament.

I guess you were banned to say that "Israel didn't like her very much so she had to go", while she just lost the elections

In the 2024 European Parliament elections, she was endorsed by celebrities, Susan Sarandon and Annie Lennox. She lost her seat at this election, with 26,855 (7.1%) first preference votes.

What evidence do you have to back up your claim that Israel was involved in that vote?

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Smear campaign from pro israel media outlets. Basically the same thing as Jeremy Corbyn.

https://m.jpost.com/international/article-805932

According to the report, during her time at the European Parliament, Daly criticized the West for “militarism,” denied supporting dictators, gained a large social media following, and appeared in state-oriented press in China and Russia.

Furthermore, The Guardian noted that Daly lost her seat despite endorsements from celebrities such as Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox and actress Susan Sarandon.

Sarandon herself is a prominent anti-Israel activist who has been embroiled in several controversies in which the Rocky Horror Picture Show actress has been accused of antisemitism.

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 7 points 6 days ago

Where is that article is there any evidence of smear campaign from pro Israel media outlets? The article has been written after the election.

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Similar to how AIPAC did not mention israel or antisemitism when targeting Jamaal Bowman their smear campaigns try to target subjects the population cares about and subsequently lies or heavily exaggerates them.

Here's an example during election period from The Times, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

There seems to be similar reports from the Irish Times, not owned by Rupert Murdoch

Instead of listing articles which are stating that she was linked to Russian, do you have any other source evidencing that she was targeted by a Israel-funded smear campaign?

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

The article you linked also appears to be a hit-piece. The supposed accusations in the title are not from the government either but from media outlets.

Latvian member of the European Parliament Tatjana Ždanoka has been accused of working with Russian intelligence services since 2004 in a joint investigation by Russian, Latvian, Estonian and Swedish media outlets.

Daly herself was never arrested for spying or taking money. There's a lot of insinuation going on but surprisingly little concrete links. Or as she herself said in the article:

Mr Wallace did not respond to a request for comment. In an email, Ms Daly said: “Would you ever cover the work that we actually do instead of occupying your time with these constant attempts to construct elaborate guilt-by-association conspiracy theories?”

Sadly there's no OpenSecrets for Ireland so it's more difficult to track everything. Though anything with the name "Times, Telegraph or Post" usually leads to israel. Irish Times doesn't have an owner but a board of directors of 10 people. With so many people it's impossible not to find some guilt by association links but I do not feel like wasting my time on that

Rupert Murdochs' Times has posted multiple smear pieces on Daly as well. It certainly was not a one-off.

Once more, do not downvote posts because you think they deserved it. Use the YDI vote for that.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago

I think many people are downvoting him not simply because he deserved it but because it's very obvious and consistent bellyaching about being sanctioned for blatant rule violations.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago

That's still a comment vote.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

Fair enough.

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

Is there anyway to have a bot counting the votes and have a results table? That might encourage people to use the letters system rather than up/down votes

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago

No, but we didn't have nearly enough traffic to warrant this. But if someone makes one, I'll allow it.

[-] stormesp@lemm.ee 7 points 6 days ago

would be good to know the context here?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Context: Linkerbaan whines every time he gets banned for incivility and blames Zionism for it. And it happens on an almost daily basis.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 days ago

Yeah he's one of the more problematic users on Lemmy, that's why I put together a little guide on how to ban users with the API since that allows preemptive banning that can prevent dealing with problematic users like this before they start trouble in communities.

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I said israel ran a campaign against Clare Daly to force her out of the European parliament which the mod deemed antisemitic.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago

YDI. Nothing more to really say, it's all been said.

I feel like these are invaluable instructions to any moderator dealing with him, or worried they might have to deal with him in the future.
