Ehh, could also be they've already got a rooster. They tend to be territorial like that.

If cartoons taught me anything about how to determine the sex of chickens, they've got 4 in that picture.

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 22 points 5 months ago

Soft to cuddle. Not for eat.

[-] TheCheddarCheese@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Now I feel a weird urge to cuddle a chicken. Although something tells me that wouldn't go as well as I'm imagining it.

After about 3 months of feeding them and handling them they'll let you do most anything if they think you have food.

You can use it to produce more for eat, just requires a chicken

Rooster meat can be eaten, it just tastes a bit different

Egg laying chickens are great on a homestead, great way to get fresh eggs

Usually, you need a 10:1 ratio or so of hens to roosters, otherwise they start fighting a bunch. So maybe the person just has 30 hens laying about ๐Ÿ™ƒ

[-] agentshags@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago

I think roosters are typically a little tougher, although still could be eaten. Maybe there's a recipe to follow to soften them up, brining the meat or something I don't know

Chicken noodle soup. Tastes 10x better when you make it with months of spite toward the creature you're eating.
