Does she mean the left when she says "progressive" or is she referring to herself and the like. Because they are the ones name calling people and using violence in their language.

Gonna need a source of that, the guy was a registered Republican but there are records showing he made a donation to a Democrat-related organisation. Personally, I'm more of a "follow the money" type person (and simply registering doesn't cost anything) but the reality is not enough investigation has been done to realistically speculate on motive yet.

His former classmates described him as definitely conservative.

His father was libertarian, his mother a democrat (source).

The money could have been a bet or a dare, or he could have done it for his mom.
