So, your only solution to fixing the country is to win a super majority every single election for all time, lest the next time the Republican wins, we will be a fascist dictatorship. Well, that doesn't seem very tenable, does it?

Guess we're just boned, right?

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

I'm saying if you want progress, then give Dems overwhelming and consistent victories.

You need to twist that to 'lest we be fascist dictatorship'. We'll see what happens after Trump, if the Republicans continue on that path. But whether they do or don't, we're back to progress and if you want progress.

I posits that Democrats are not the party of progress as long as they ignore progressives.

Im politically homeless.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

They can't be progressive when they keep losing any of the 1) House of representatives, 2) Senate, or 3) Presidency. You want progress? Give them all 3 consistently and overwhelmingly.

[-] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

So literally what I said, we have to win overwhelming super majorities and every single branch where there's no hope for the country. Got it, untenable.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Well you want to keep turning this to "no hope", down from "fascist". Turn this around, do you want progress? That's what it is progress.

Untenable? Dude, votes decide this. Voting is simple. This is simple.

Seems very much like you want to decide it's "untenable" so that you can give up, excuse yourself from not voting, and (here's the kicker) then bitch online.

[-] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

The ironic part is I live in a Ruby Red State. Thanks to the Electoral College, my vote literally does not matter. So frankly, if I want to throw it away in protest, that's my right.

"I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas."

[-] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

The idea was to pressure the neoliberal class into enacting change. They seem like they don't want to do it.

Hell, they don't even put on the appearance of wanting to do it once they do get in power.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

"I'm going to bitch online while refusing to do anything".

They seem like they don’t want to do it.

Again, give Dems overwhelming and consistent victories.

Hell, they don’t even put on the appearance of wanting to do it once they do get in power.

Now you're sticking your head in the sand. Biden is doing a fuckton. He'd do even more if, guess what, he had the house and was polling so well that he could figure there no chance of losing.

[-] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Alright, if you're not willing to accept the faults and Biden, there is no reason to continue this conversation. You're living in a fantasy land

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Dude, when you run against an incumbent (Trump), you're going to get a centre candidate. We've discussed this. What happens when the polls say Trump has an advantage? They go further centre.

How do you get even more left (again because Biden is actually doing a fuckton)? You give Dems consistent and overwhelming victories. In all 3 of House, Senate, Presidency.

[-] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

No, again, what you explicitly just described was them going to the right and winning elections because of it. How does that make him go to the left?

I'm arguing, and you don't seem to agree with this, that Democrats are not actually as left leaning as you think they are. They aren't refusing to enact progressive policies because it's not politically tenable. They're refusing to do so because they do not believe in it.

They are much quicker to go to the right than they will ever be to go to the left. And if you think that somehow rewarding that behavior is going to change their minds, then I don't know how to convince you. You just aren't being a rational actor.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Dude, when you run against an incumbent (Trump) you have to run a centre candidate. Then you have that person for 8 years.

Democrats are not actually as left leaning as you think they are.

Dude, they can't be as left as you want them to when they lose ANY of the following 3: 1) House of Representatives, 2) Senate, 3) Presidency.

Any. One. Of. Those. Three. Which they can lose at any point. And if they lose ANY one of those three, they have to compromise.

So how do you ensure they don't have to compromise? Make sure they don't lose any one of those three.

behavior

Let's evaluate the last say 24 years. Obama had all 3 of house, senate, and presidency for 2/8 years. Biden had it for 2/4 years. Let's add it up for the last 24 years: That means Dems had it for 4/24 years. Read that again, they had control for only 4 the last 24 years.

And if you want the filibuster proof majority, then Obama had it for 4 months. Not years, MONTHS. Biden never had it. That's 0.333 years of the last 24 years.

Look at those stats: Dems had control for 4 years of the last 24 years. If want filibuster proof control, Dems had control for 4 MONTHS of the last 24 years. But you want to bitch how they can't do as much as you want them to? Do you even hear yourself?

Think this through. How much can you do when you have control for a measly 4 years of the last 24 years - which can still be filibustered, so: How much can you do when you have control for an incredibly measly 4 MONTHS of the last 24 years? Think about this. Seriously, think through this.

That's why I say if you want progress you have to give Dems overwhelming and consistent victories.

your only solution to fixing the country is to win a super majority every single election for all time

Wow, the strategy of consistently voting for the party that most aligns with your values? What idiots!

Are you really implying that there is a conceivable reality in which Democrats win every election for the rest of time?
