Dedicated button (lemmy.world)

Brent @SkyCladBrent:

Imagine there being a website so popular that game console manufacturers put a dedicated button on their controllers to take and post screenshots and then you fuck the website up so much that they disable it

X, formerly known as Twitter

The biggest fuck you to Musk 😂

I particularly enjoy that they repeat it 5 times in their blog post, because they really did not feel like readers would know which "X" they're referring to.

[-] 520@kbin.social 27 points 6 months ago

Because Twitter as a brand had a godly status in terms of name recognition.

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 13 points 6 months ago

I mean, yeah, but also "X" has no name recognition at all. As in, you don't even recognize that it is a name.

If the guy would have called it "Musk's Nazi Paradise", then you would have only had to explain once in the text, that it used to be called "Twitter".
"X", on the other hand, could be the figure of speech for an undetermined quantity or just a typo.

And the truly sad part is, after all this time, this is still true.

[-] Iron_Lynx@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

Nah. The bigger fuck you is still calling it twitter with no acknowledgement of the name change.

An even bigger one would be calling it a centralised Mastodon alternative 😜

It reminds me of when Prince changed his name to an illegible symbol and everyone said, "Haha, no." and started calling him "The artist formerly known as Prince" because a whole sentence was easier.

[-] moody@lemmings.world 18 points 6 months ago

He only did that because Warner Bros argued that they owned the Prince trademark, despite it being his actual name, and wouldn't let him use it outside of a contract with them.

Him changing his artist name was basically a big 'fuck you' to them, and TAFKAP being in common usage was an even bigger one.

Wow I didn’t know that.
