Actually I don't think that's necessarily true, they just have two separate scales which probably overlap.

Are you suggesting the American Very Spicy might actually come between Mild and Medium? I guess you might be right, but I'm a tad sceptical.

Genuine Question. Are people from other countries unaware america has like a whole subculture of people that basically torture themselves by eating food so spicy it doesn't even have a flavour besides spice anymore? The worlds hottest pepper comes from the US for a reason.

I've never been to America, but most restaurants with foreign cuisine face this problem and solve it the same way: if a customer asks for medium spice, the chef needs to know whether the customer wants the local or foreign scale.

There's no implication that mild is hotter than American very spicy, you're looking at two separate scales.
