Why do people still shop at Walmart? Is it to help the evil family of billionaires? To destroy local economies? Love of a company that calls the police on customers all the time often for no real reason?

EDIT: This has been an informative look at why everything keeps getting worse. People are the problem.

Because Walmart ate the smaller stores

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Because many people don't have any other options.

[-] LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago

Many don't have any other options. Whether because other options are too expensive or just don't exist. Shop there or just don't eat. Not much of a choice.

Well where I am the local grocery stores are where you go when you want to pay gas station chain prices at the grocery store.

Walmart gives it to you the cheapest available. So its like $2 vs $5 for a Gatorade and that's one item. I don't understand how anyone affords to shop anywhere else.

And yeah I feel you they are evil and the Waltons suck and the sales tax kills little kids in other countries through missle strikes and it all fucking sucks I feel you on that but damn at the end of the day I'm either going to blow my brains out about it or find the cheapest way to continue feeding me and my family. Which is unfortunately wal mart.

I envy the privelage one must have to be experiencing to ask questions like "why do people shop where its cheapest!?".

I have to scrape together change and some people drink $8 cups of coffee in the morning that they don't even finish I really don't get it maybe I should go back to school. I don't understand how people blow money comfortably like that it would keep me awake at night knowing I blew $8 on a single cup of coffee.

I see people driving brand new cars and smoking cigarettes in them and going out to clubs every night. What the fuck do these people do?? They can't ALL be drug dealers or jewel theifs or some shit. I really don't understand how it can be that way when I am drowning in debt from an extreme health injury I had to use credit cards to get through.

Idk this is getting off topic. People shop at the cheapest place because they can barely afford to breathe without it sending them into panic attacks about their financial situation.

the sales tax kills little kids in other countries

I agree with you, shop where you have to and do what you need to do to get by... sorry it's so rough for you at the moment, but I did want to let you know that at least your sales tax money isn't killing kids in other countries because the state gets the sales tax. Hopefully that helps just a little bit.

And, since the baby killing money comes from income tax, if you're low income hopefully you can at least rest easy knowing that you're contributing less to the baby killing machine.

The above is all mostly tongue in cheek, I feel for you and certainly don't want to make light of a tough situation, but I'm hoping you at least got a smile out of it.

I guess that even at my poorest, which wasn't all that long ago and was rock bottom, I understood the difference between price and cost.

[-] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

If you got to choose to spend 20-30% more on food because of your principles and feelings about the store then you have no idea what rock bottom is.

You've never even seen the rock dude.

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Sounds like your rock bottom wasn't that rock bottom, then.

[-] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 days ago

Did you understand the cost of a 75 minute drive to avoid walmart?

[-] JennyLaFae 3 points 2 days ago

I have to catch an extra bus to get to the affordable grocery store, and the transfer point is the same stop as going to wally anyways. I hate it but material conditions are what they are.

[-] Squirrelanna 3 points 2 days ago

You have bus infrastructure?

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 27 points 2 days ago

People shop at Walmart because they're broke and have no other choice. They have the best prices, especially for people that can't afford Costco membership.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago

I have a Costco membership & still end up buying some items from Walmart because sure I'm paying more per item, but I can finish the pack before it goes bad so it's more cost effective.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

amount i save on gas more than pays for the membership at costco. or they did back when i drove an ICE vehicle

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Agreed, I still think some people would avoid it

[-] COASTER1921@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago

The good news is that Aldi is eating their cake lately. The "normal" big chain grocery stores are the same price as Whole Foods around me, with the expectation that you'll use coupons to bring the prices into reality. Meanwhile Aldi and Walmart have their regularly priced groceries below the supermarket chain's even after couponing. If I didn't have access to Aldi I'd absolutely be going to Walmart for my groceries, at the end of the day every penny saved counts.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

WF is actually more cheaper these days compared target, and even safeway. often times food items that are nearby date will be half off. plus prime sales are always there.

[-] COASTER1921@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Yep, same near me. Safeway is the worst with the couponing too. You must use their app for the coupons and if there aren't coupons for exactly what you want you'll end up spending more than if you'd just gone to whole foods. Their coupons in the app also don't always scan correctly. To top it all off, I don't know if this is a problem with my location or Safeway as a whole, but the produce is already halfway rotten. They're truly the worst grocery store chain I know it.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

i went there for the first time in almost a long time, because stopped going before the pandemic because the security was too sus. and i was shocked how expensive things are in there, compared to even walgreens, lol, and target. never seen rotten food at safeway, but its just how expensive some items are you would think should be cheap. Im guessing people are mostly using it for Pharmacy instead.

they covid, and competition probably did them in. so many other chains to choose from besides safeway. plus there things like asian food places, like pho, boba shops, not the low quality food of safeway.

I went to Walmart once because at the time it was the only grocery store in the area that carried plantains. I have honestly never shopped anywhere else where I felt that level of malevolence from the employees. It was as if they were all working there only because their children were being held hostage and tortured and they were right on the cusp of deciding they didn't really love their children that much. I thought I was close to getting stabbed by one of them, and I hadn't even asked anybody for help finding anything.

What really blows my mind though is why anyone shops at Target. At least stuff at Walmart is cheap, but Target is ridiculously expensive while still being shit, especially the grocery department.

[-] Folstar@lemmus.org 8 points 2 days ago

This, with more steps, is about accurate.

Big mood. We are all coerced to wage slave by the gatekeeping of the necessities of life away from us. Im not against working to contribute to "civilization", but I am opposed to this exploitation.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

target is also for some reason have empty shelves majority of the time, and this was before and ealry days of the pandemic. at firs thtier up and up instore brand was cheap and good quality, but then they went with even cheaper material and other things got more expensive.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

walmart for some people have all thier needs in one store. they sure isnt going to a target where its more expensive, and less items. or another chain that may or may not be common in the area.

[-] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I'm a wheelchair user on disability. Walmart gives me a chance due to the shopping for my family because my wife works a lot of hours trying to keep our ass alive. So the fact that I can order delivery and pay in-store prices rather than instacart prices meaning inflated prices on every single item. That's valuable to me.

Walmart sucks. But so does the entire fucking industry. They all suck. Even places like Aldi which are better than a lot, they may let their cashiers sit down but they still work their employees so hard.

Name you one grocery store chain that's not completely full of bullshit and I will gladly curse out. Walmart.

Well, I'm going to curse out Walmart anyway. But I think most of them aren't just really, frankly as bad in their own way

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There's an asian grocery store near Me run by an old Chinese lady. The entire shop is the size of a large bedroom and it's packed to the rafters with imported Asian food. They seem pretty alright.

Oh wait you said chain. Lmao no.
