Ghost guns are not even illegal...

They are in some U.S. States such as New York.

...and can be made with some metalworking and wood.

If it's legal where someone lives you can build an AR-15 using an 80% lower or a Glock knock-off using mix&pour Resin kits; either of those can be done by most people in an apartment. If you have more space and talent there's a video out there showing how to build an AK from a common shovel.

You can build a basic shotgun in the plumbing aisle at Home Depot and there are functional practical designs for DIY sub-machine guns out there.

The American tradition of building ones own firearms is 250 years old and (mostly) alive and well.

I mean, they sell kits to build your own gun. I haven't done it, but in concept it feels kind of like Lego or a kit car to me.
