If you have to choose to deactivate it, then that's the opposite of opt-in
Except if you use noai.duckduckgo.com
Well, it's more like opt-out. The old duckduckgo is the ai version. The ai-free option lives on a subdomain called "noai".
Fair enough, I have used duckduckgo for a while but don't use the ai part.
