He has spoken of the USSR and historical Russia, I think he has been hoping to try and take over all of the surrounding land to restore the 'empire' and have better protection with the mountainous regions.

It would have made a difference. If the Russian-puppet leaders had stayed in place then there would have been no fight and just controlled by Russia the easy way.
