I still completely disageee. The way the camera perceives the face has to do with working distance, and focal length only somewhat affects the working distance. Cropping is just another way a photographer can change the working distance, and the effect of doing so is remarkably similar to the effect of changing the lens to get a different focal length.

should anybody else in this thread want to have more pleasing photographs of themselfs taken try to ask someone to take a photo of you using a longer lense of at least 50mm or even 80-105mm (full frame equivalent, on a crop sensor 30mm onwards is fine). if you have no access a camera with interchangeable lenses or someone who does but have a new phone with a zoom lense on the back (not just slidy zoom in software, needs to have at least one more lense on the back) try to set up the phone with the most zoom on a tripod and use the timer or ask someone for help.
