I read this as trans people feel pretty good about themselves until they accidentally see a picture of themselves.
I'm not a selfie person, so I very rarely intend to open the front camera. I might open my phone to take a picture and get a reflection instead, and the surprise is jarring.
Also, never been a fan of how I photograph in general. I hear that's a fairly common experience.
There's even a phenomenon where you can like how you appear in the mirror, but not how you appear in video or photos. I believe this is because the mirror is real life and our lizard brains recognize that as a reflection of ourselves. However digital pictures aren't real enough for our primitive brains, so it gives this weird feeling of otherness.
Anyway, my two cents is that I just read this as not liking how I look in photos.
Interesting. I read it as a silly way to give advice (like the original: "don't use duct tape for that").
As a trans woman who doesn't pass (obligatory "passing is dumb" disclaimer), I try to avoid seeing both my reflection, and photos of myself. Despite this, I do think that the mirror is friendlier (and more accurate) than a phone's front camera.
By the way, when you look in the mirror, do you get almost an... Uncanny Valley effect?
