Nono, you're whitewashing it, the NYT has a history of treating even its own trans staff kinda shittily.
I'm not finding what you're talking about, but I did find this interview with a trans ex-editor of the NYT talking about the way the NYT became anti-trans, it looks like it changed fairly dramatically around 2022 - 2023 (only a couple years ago): https://transnews.network/p/a-directive-from-above-former-nyt-editor-lays-out-how-the-paper-pushes-anti-trans-bigotry
Before then, I think what I said above is still true, that the paper was not particularly committed or zealous about its anti-trans bigotry and was simply morally negligent, but now it does look like they are committed transphobes.
