Surely you can sue Samsung here? The cost of that hotel and rescheduled flight (and, if he's American, the emergency hospital cost) are some pretty damn obvious damages even if other factors like emotional impact are not permitted.

By buying it or using the app for it, he's probably agreed to some binding arbitration BS along with some other things that would make a lawsuit practically impossible.

[-] CompostMaterial@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago

Arbitration just means you don't go to trial in front of a jury. You can still sue, the claim just goes to an arbitor to find an agreement. Most lawsuits end in out of court settlements anyway.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago

The arbiter is bought and paid for by Samsung. I wonder what the outcome will be.

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 21 points 1 week ago

If bias is obvious, and it constitutes fraud, a decision in arbitration can be vacated by courts.

If bias is clear during proceedings, the arbitrator can be challenged, then a new independent arbiter can be selected.

While its bullshit that this kind of stuff gets shoved into EULAs, its not the end of things in terms of getting an appropriate outcome.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And thats a massive onus on the claimant.

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago

Just threaten to call ICE on the arbiter

[-] Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Then bring Master Chief to settle for you.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 week ago

I wonder how they got it off. Doesn’t look like they cut it.

[-] remon@ani.social 60 points 1 week ago

Probably lubricant. Cutting it would have a high chance of puncturing the battery and burn your finger.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Yes, 100% is high.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

Cut it off while his hand is underwater?

[-] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 week ago

Water does not help battery fires

[-] Damage@feddit.it 4 points 1 week ago
[-] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

This would end up with the entire hand being removed

I've seen this nylon tape method too

[-] CuddlyCassowary@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In addition to lubricant you can thread string or thin tape through the ring and wrap it around the finger to compress it while working the ring off. I’m sure there must be videos out there that show this technique.

Edit: Here’s one that came up easily…not saying it’s the best, but it gives the idea: https://youtube.com/shorts/gI95I2f2jJM

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That's far more elegant than taking the finger off. Cool example video - thanks for sharing. I didn't know you could do that.

[-] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Taking the finger off is so much more fun though.

[-] Tower@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Dental floss works too!

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 16 points 1 week ago

That's not really a spicy pillow is it.

Mode like a spicy... Hmmm. Scrunchie?

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago
[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Otherwise known as my asshole after way too much spicy chili.

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah that works better.

[-] 87Six@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago

Probably could have removed it himself with string and lubricant if he were not an idiot that buys a fucking smart ring.

[-] anzo@programming.dev 50 points 1 week ago

What you are doing is victim blaming. Not cool.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

And what you are doing is saying people who buy Samsung products shouldn't expect them to explode or catch fire. Not cool.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 19 points 1 week ago

No matter what product you buy, you shouldn't expect them to explode or catch fire. Singling out any particular brand is just dumb.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Name another brand that has repeatedly been in the news for products of various types, from jewelry to household appliances, that has been known to explode or catch fire. Sounds like you ignore that news and keep buying from that shit company and now you're salty for being called on it.

Edit: looks like they can't. Probably mad and sad that their 10 inch Samsung phone seems like a bad investment now

[-] RedAggroBest@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Samsung batteries weren't the only ones, just the only big news stories. You should try researching more and being condescending less.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Oh yeah? Perhaps you can name other washing machines that caught fire randomly? Without googling for 10 minutes?

[-] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

I bought some fireworks, expecting them not to explode and catch fire, but wtf thats exactly what they did after I lit the fuse!

[-] anzo@programming.dev 1 points 1 week ago

No, I didn't do that. Now you are doing strawman argument for trolling... But whatever. I didn't mean to engage with you. Just pointed out what you were doing in the interest of help you be more kind. Of course, such changes need to come from within oneself too. I know you can!

[-] 87Six@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

These victims of their own brains are what fuel an economy built on marketing, lies, shady TOC, and absurd prices for terrible quality. They get nothing in the way of compassion for being a victim from me.

[-] Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

We all fuel an economy built on marketing, lies, shady TOC, and absurd prices. Sometimes we can try to break away by using FOSS or buying old, but eventually we all come back for something.

[-] 87Six@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Nothing in my comment in blaming. I'm stating they're pretty stupid but I expected nothing more from someone that buys such crap.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 21 points 1 week ago

Yes, that's the blaming that they're talking about.

[-] voracitude@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It may surprise you to learn that not everyone knows everything you know, and there are people out there who know things you don't.

[-] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Ah yes, because everyone packs lube and string in their carry-on bag when traveling and has 20 extra minutes to sit down and try to figure this out right before boarding a plane.

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I had a ring I couldn't get off. Did the lube and string thing and didn't work.

What I did learn though is that so long as your finger is not blue, you can go to most jewelers and they can cut the ring off for you at no charge. If your finger is blue, go to the emergency room.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

Had to do this for a wedding band that I had kept on for years to the point where my finger had grown larger. Tried all the DIY tricks, and they'd be close but still not enough. Finally admitted I'd have to cut it at a jewelers, was off in 30 seconds. Huge reason why I would never consider a tungsten ring. Might as well just plan a reattachment surgery.

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Wait because the tungsten ring will shatter? Or because it's too tough?

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

I think it requires special tools to cut, and that's just machining the metal away from a finger. Maybe there's a way, but I doubt it's something any jeweler or even ER will have.

[-] remon@ani.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Buy stupid things, win stupid prices!

What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

Cyberpunk characteristics include:
