“[This] appears to be an action by Jimmy Kimmel to play into the narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or Republican-motivated person,” Carr said. “What people don’t understand is that the broadcasters … have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest. When we see stuff like this, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Welcome to your fascist state, ladies and gentlemen. If you don't kiss the ring and grease the palms, then you're out.

look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way.

Said exactly like a thug in a mob movie.

Counterpoint: what is the FCC going to do to physically stop them? Jam the signal? Send in men with guns?

Revoke their broadcast license, to make it impossible for them to be on the air with their distributors.

Generally productions are a multi-stage process with several companies involved.

revoke license

Physically

make it impossible

How? Impossible how?

[-] Truscape 27 points 2 weeks ago

Unless everyone works together, from content creation all the way down to distribution, some part of the chain will comply with the federal government. They unfortunately don't need to do anything physical - the show is already dependent on several entities.

So, not physically, and not impossible.

Just illegal and therefore cool?

[-] Truscape 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Illegal, and never cool. I don't like this just as much as you. It's just any physical action wouldn't make a difference.

I think even jimmy Kimmel could be cool if he was doing pirate broadcast art crimes.

I feel like nothing short of physical action really needs to be paid attention to.

Problem is there’re coming for the internet I have to imagine

Kimmel, Colbert, Oliver - let’s say they all just doing YouTube or their own websites tomorrow. The content will make the admin just as mad, so that means the admin has to go after the web.

Decentralized meshnets our only hope?

decentralized mesh nets

I read 'walkaway'; those are potentially very cool. I like this idea.

[-] parody@lemmings.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Near future SciFi. Mesh networks feature prominently.

Which ones? The FCC doesn't have men with guns. The FBI are only good for posting now. They gonna send in the ATF?

[-] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Whoever the dictator wants, dude. Don't you get it?

That's not going to be a very competent thing, and it would cost them more.

[-] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

I agree. Are we talking about a competent man?

[-] EvilHankVenture@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Federal Marshalls, or local law enforcement.

Oh. We know this how?
