A lot of Lemmy is obsessed with 'the jews'. It's honestly super tiring. I guess there's a reason reddit still dominates.

Conflating Israel and its actions with Judaism in general is anti-Semitic.

I'm afraid it's probably inevitable, antisemitism is coming back into fashion. Good job, Zionists.

Conflation is antisemitic, and blaming Canadian Jews for what Israel is doing is unacceptable. I think we should be asking Canada's Jewish communities to use their special relationship(s) with Israel to apply maximum pressure to stop the genocide and famine.

I think you should write a letter to your MP first. The Israeli ambassador second. A local Israeli consular official third (if applicable). Your MLA/MPP fourth. Any organizations you're part of that have a special relationship with Israel.

...Then talk to your Jewish friends to explain that you've reached out to the people most responsible for communicating with Israel, but if they feel they have a special relationship with Israel you'd really appreciate it if they'd use whatever influenece they have to make it clear that Canada's Jewish community doesn't support the genocide of Gaza.

CBC's podcast Front Burner recently did an interview with a UNICEF worker that had just returned from Gaza, it's heartbreaking.

Sure but there's also a dog whistle aspect. Honestly though as a non-jew but also a non-jew hater it makes lemmy a really unappealing platform when every network I go on just wants to talk about (((the jews))). I know that if you click the link and read the article the word Jewish comes up 143 times and Israel 60 but guys.... I just want to read about Canada or something else unrelated to the middle east.

[-] grte@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Right, because the specific context is that Israel is purposefully trying to utilize people's understandable distaste for anti-Semitism to cover for its actions, and how Canadian media outlets are helping that happen. When Israel itself is trying to further the anti-Semitic notion that Jewish people totally unrelated to the state of Israel have any relation or responsibility for that state's actions, it makes sense that Judaism might have to come up in the discussion.

I just want to read about Canada or something else unrelated to the middle east.

Well I have good news. There are many other posts in this community from just today and yesterday that don't relate to Israel or the Middle East at all. But you read and commented on this one for some reason.

Yeah but Lemmy is so terrible. I think I'll just give up and go back to reddit. Lemmy is cool tech but if you don't want to talk about (((the jews))), there's not enough content and it's a really negative space to visit.

I'm sure your contributions will be missed.

This is a dishonest representation of what the article is about and why the word "jews" shows up so many times. The article talks about precisely how pro-Israeli spokespeople and news coverage use "jews" as a cover for their pro-Israeli positions. For example, there is a whole section about how nobody except the pro-Israelis call Israel "the jewish state". Another is about how lists of IDF soldiers is being turned around by pro-Israeli spokespeople and their sympathizers as "lists of jews".

In effect, you're doing the same judo move that the article itself documents. You are turning the thread under an article about how criticism of Israel is being derailed by bad faith accusations of antisemitism, into ...a series of bad faith accusations of antisemitism on the entire lemmy platform and community!

Nobody fucking wants to talk about (((the Jews))) except ...you!
