Only the French (afaik, I'm not a polyglot) get it right, they call it 'double V'

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

For most of the history of the Latin alphabet, there was no distinction between U and V.

[-] XTL@sopuli.xyz 1 points 15 hours ago

And Finnish. And probably many many more since that's what it is.

In germany it is called W, pronounced [veː], non of that doubl bullshit, just it's own letter.

[-] Part4@infosec.pub 2 points 15 hours ago

Yeah the double bullshit ruins the alphabet. It's much better to go ... T U V VE X Y Z.

[-] HK65@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

Just as in Hungarian, duplavé FTW

[-] nocturne@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

More like Double Eww amirite?

[-] Tippon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 day ago

Not particularly, it's just one of those taking the piss out of the neighbours jokes. Wales is small enough that we're all close enough to be neighbours :)

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Yep. According to a quick search, Massachusetts is a wee bit larger in area, but has almost exactly the same amount of coastline. Had no clue Wales was so small.

[-] hansolo@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago

Isn't that when a whole bunch of Welsh just showed up out of nowhere 538 million years ago?

[-] wjrii@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

No, they exploded, as the Welsh are wont to do.
