White people have some really bad names. Only a white woman would name her kid khaleesi.

Guy I know worked ers. Kid named Nosmo. The mother looked up, saw the no smoking sign, said that sounds good.

As far as names go it's better than the white ones lmao.

[Sincere] Apart from it being a reference and sounding appropriative in some ways what's wrong with Khaleesi?

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

Isn't it like calling your kid Quigon, because you watched a lot of Star Wars?

[-] oftheair 4 points 2 months ago

Hmmm, we suppose. We just wouldn't want people who had that name to be made fun of for no fault of their own.

Names are interesting things, and a deep interest of ours.

they are indeed, I just find that names derived from consumable works have seemingly less heartfelt meaning than established names from ancestral roots.

I do agree that mixing it up a little makes for a more interesting world. I'd love to meet a Lyra at some point in my life

[-] oftheair 2 points 2 months ago

That's fair and a good point!

Oh, Lyra from "his dark materials", is it something else, or just that you like that name?

Not OP, but isn't Lyra Jyn Erso's mom?

[-] oftheair 1 points 2 months ago

Oh, we didn't know that or forgot. Thanks!

If her last name is King, that's genius

I think this exact string was a plot point in Ramona and her father by Beverly Cleary. Ramona intended to create a "NO SMOKING" sign, but paper dimension limitations caused the sign to read "NOSMO KING".

It sounds like a pretty good book, with some real themes dealing with unemployment and the stress that has on the whole family.

I did find this bit a little funny:

Ramona grows concerned about her father's smoking habit and works with Beezus to leave messages all over the house.

who the hell is Beezus lmfao

who the hell is Beezus lmfao

Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby is Ramona's elder sister. IIRC, she got her nickname because Ramona had difficulty pronouncing "Beatrice" when she was little.

It's fairly common for parents to name their children based on the day they were born, like naming them after the saint that day represents.

I met a guy who's name was the equivalent to "nat-hol" because he was born on the local national holiday and that's what it showed on the calendar for that day.

These people are naming children like animals.
