Write, call & urge others to tell congress to stop HR 22 or the SAVE act

https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/8281

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/elections/2025/02/12/what-is-the-save-act/78386676007/

If passed it will prevent anyone who has ever changed their name from registering to vote.

That includes their last name if they were married or divorced. Or their first name for gender or any other reason.

It also bans mail in voting, online voter registration.

It criminalizes helping people register to vote & mandates massive voter purges disproportionately targeting women & people of color - so once their registration has been purged it could be impossible for hundreds millions of americans to get registered again.

It is urgent because- it is the republicans in congress top priority to get this voter suppression bill passed.

If you want to call your local representatives and they’re heavily Republican, it helps to lean into how this will affect married women and military personnel overseas.

It’s an unfortunate truth that if you call saying you’re worried about trans people or immigrants, they will not listen.

Explain how this puts a heavy burden on married women to pay for an expensive passport with their new name, and how military personnel fighting for our country will have their rights stripped from them.

Essentially, roleplay as a Republican constituent and think about what they might care about.

Even if they don’t care about women, they pretend to care about military personnel.

I got a response from my senator,

Dear Mrs. Another Catgirl:

Thank you for writing to express your concerns regarding Republican attacks on voting rights. I agree that all Americans-no matter where they live-should have the freedom to vote without fear of discrimination.

As you know, during the 118th Congress, Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Representative John Sarbanes (D-MD-3), and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY-8) reintroduced S.2344/H.R. 11, the Freedom to Vote Act. This bill sets basic standards for Americans to vote safely and securely. By establishing automatic, same-day voter registration, expanding voting access, and improving election security and safety, this legislation helps instill confidence that our Nation's elections are free and fair. Although the Freedom to Vote Act has not been reintroduced in the 119th Congress, I will closely monitor any related legislation before the Senate. I am proud to cosponsor this important bill, and I will continue my efforts to pass commonsense, real voting rights legislation.

The Senate must pass laws that make it easier, simpler, and safer for American citizens to exercise their most fundamental right. That is why, during the 118th Congress, I cosponsored S. 512, the Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act of 2023. This legislation would ensure that Americans know who funds political ads and prevent foreign-controlled entities from spending unlimited sums in our elections through their U.S. based subsidiaries. I will continue to monitor the reintroduction of the DISCLOSE Act in the 119th Congress. During the 117th Congress, I cosponsored both S.2747, the Freedom to Vote Act, and S.1, the For the People Act, to enhance election security, shine a light on campaign finance, and improve ballot access. Going forward, I will continue to work to ensure all citizens' voices are heard equally-without bias based on wealth, connections, or lot in life.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please keep in touch with your thoughts and opinions.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer

United States Senator
