I'd like to read this in a positive light, if not just for my own sanity.
I choose to believe they probably had a hunch because of the flag and wanted to reassure the non-cis person that quote unquote "passing" is getting easier and easier. Kind of a silent endorsement that you should be who you are because you can't tell anymore and that's a good thing.

I think folks around here underestimate how many people aren't getting trans stuff in their social media feed (e.g. by browsing
allon Lemmy) and thus wouldn't recognize a trans flag.And even if they did recognize it, cis people are allowed to wear it too.
Are we? I am happy to show my support but don't want to pretend that I'm part of the community.
I don't know if there are formal rules around the use of these flags (I assume not), but, fwiw, as a trans person myself, I like seeing them worn in general. I don't really assume or care too much about the person wearing them, but I find it reassuring. Both in the sense of, "hey, at least this one person probably doesn't have a problem with me existing. One less rando for me to worry about", and in the sense of, "hey, at least this one person can openly exhibit a symbol of trans support and visibility without having been crucified for it. Hopefully that means I'm unlikely to catch flak for not passing around these here parts".

If I went up to someone wearing a pride flag and tried to relate to them over that flag, only to find out that they're just an ally wearing it...

If I found out that an ally (depending on the area they're in) risked their lives in order to make it more difficult to identify my minority group...
I don't think I'd mind. I would love to see cis people walking around in trans pride gear with the phrase "aren't we all people?" All over it
I mean, I browse /all and still see trans stuff pretty regularly.
Right, that's my point: a lot of people who aren't on social media at all, or are on larger platforms with more content and have their feeds more tailored to their interests. They aren't routinely running across trans stuff and therefore might not be likely to recognize trans symbols.
Not that there's anything wrong with this thread, but I'm only here 'cause I'm scraping the bottom of the 'algorithm' barrel, so to speak. If I were still on Reddit I'm sure similar posts would exist, but I never would've seen them.
