I've had hemorrhoids for like 25 years, so I've always been very discerning about my toilet paper.

this entire time, I've been using whatever toilet paper I have found to be the softest as facial tissue, to blow my nose, as well. my reasoning being, if this stuff is gentle enough for my hemorrhoids, of course it's going to be gentle enough for repeated use on my upper lip.

then, a friend turns me on to one of those new "with lotion" facial tissues (my bathroom tissue always has aloe in it) and wouldn't you know it, my upper lip finds it to be softer than the toilet paper. but, when I try using it as toilet paper, my anus doesn't find it to be less irritating than the toilet paper.

why do my butthole and my upper lip think that different things are softer? is it just chemistry?

edit: The reason I find it an odd term is because human ancestry literally doesn't follow a line. It always branches off, even if only to just include two parents. It's a tree like structure, a line would misrepresent it

I'm genuinely curious about peoples thoughts on this.

It made sense for a while. But the branding change was 16 months ago. The URI change was 3 months ago. Everybody knows now what X is. Yet for some reason, I still see in news stories today:
"... on X — formerly known as Twitter — and said ..."
I really don't think that's needed anymore. But I'm always one to want changes as fast and painless as possible.

So what do you think would be an appropriate amount of time to keep reminding everyone that Twitter is now X?
Months?
Years?
How many?

It seems like it'd be useful to have a jar of béarnaise or hollandaise, but I have to make those. Can't buy good béarnaise or hollandaise. Good mayo is easy to get tho. WTF?

With winter coming up, I have two options for home heating.

Central unit

  • I can use the central unit and close/open vents throughout the house to heat up only the individual rooms I want. This would heat up rooms very quickly. However, to make this work, the living room with the thermostat will also need to be heated so that the thermostat reads the proper temperature. The living room is by far the largest space at about 2.5 times the size of the largest room.

Oil-filled radiator

  • I can use an oil-filled radiator to heat up an individual room. This would be much slower, but I wouldn't have to heat up the entire living room. However, the oil-filled heater might not be as efficient as the central unit. I don't know. I plan to rarely heat up the living, no more than once per month.

Edit: The central heating unit is actually a heating kit made up of a few coils that is added to the central a/c.

Edit 2: Where I live, it might freeze once per year over night for a few hours.

Which would be more efficient on the electrical bill, and would t be considerable or negligible?

How can I migrate all my likes, community subscriptions, posts, comments etc to another instance?

Is this even currently possible?

Thanks for reading

I’m looking for serious answers to understand the mentality. Please avoid the snark. I know it’s low hanging and tempting but I’m pretty sure most, if not all, of use here on Lemmy “get it”.

I just can’t get out of my head how absurd it is that we, in the U.S. anyway, put so much of the tax burden on working class folks instead of those most benefiting from our economic system.

It seems to me the standard deduction should be at least the median personal income (~$40k) if not the mean(~$60k) with progressive tax brackets adjusted to cover costs thereafter and possibly a supplemental wealth tax.

But I’m not an economist so trying to understand why I’m wildly wrong and this would be a terrible idea either from an economic perspective or from a political perspective.

I always see laptops come with larger bricks that have separate mains cable which plugs into the brick. Even if the adapter has some low power rating.

Example for comparison:

On the right is a standard laptop adapter.
Same price, same connector, same protocol, same power rating, far different size.

Why is that so?

Actually, the GaN adapter on the left also advertises itself as being meant for laptops, but by default, almost all laptops will come with something like the one on the right.

Or is it simply cheaper to manufacture while being sold for the same price?

My job at wal-mart has been fluctuating and bipolar that it's making me want to potentially seek out other jobs. I've acquired a few certifications with them that enables me to operate some of their machines like electric pallet jack, sit-down forklift, a walking stacker .etc

Unbeknownst to me, I am not allowed to carry these certifications outside Wal-Mart to use. But I know I can at least mention on my resume that I am capable of using these machines.

How would I word this on my resume?

4 years ago I was a Pennsylvania resident and registered voter. I have since moved to another state and have switched my voter registration. I had assumed changing my registration would be sufficient however, I am on some list of PA voters bc I get A LOT (oh my god it’s so much) of political texts and calls. It’s too late for this election and perhaps it won’t be so bad next time, and I wish they weren’t wasting their time and that my inbox weren’t so full.

The ones I buy contain lemon for preservation, but I don't like the acidic taste of lemon in tomato sauce.

I stayed at an Airbnb recently And I was curious what the actual value of it was so I looked it up on Zillow. Sold in 2015 for 350k, sold again in 2022 for $750k, now listed for sale 1.2 million. It's a cabin in North Carolina, literally nothing special. I remember back before 2020 there was tons of mountain and cabins and homes and stuff like that anywhere from 2:50 to 500K. Now you won't find a single one less than 800k....

Regular homes are just as bad. I'm seeing homes in my area that sold for around $200 to 300K in 2019, now they are 500k and above. I don't understand how this makes any sense? Salaries were not doubled, but somehow the price of all homes are now twice as much. Is this some sort of cost fixing scheme by the real estate industry to just drive up the price of homes and double them or something? Because it doesn't really make sense to me I guess.

I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason why we haven't done this yet. Too expensive? Would launching it into the sun cause the smoke (if there is even smoke in space) to find its way back to Earth, therefore polluting the air?

This is an incredibly stupid question.

I'm practicing a performance for my music class and I've always wondered if I'm scaring them (although they don't seem to care). I have rabbits if that changes anything, but a general answer around any pet would work

I'm very careful with privacy and security so I was surprised I got an obvious phishing email from "American Express". I reported the email and moved on only to get another one today. I checked haveibeenpwned and it came back clear. I have never gotten a phishing email before the other day. As for the senders, they all came from generic IT sounding email addresses. They obviously weren't American Express.

I only use new to "refresh" my list of filtered content:

  • AI generated images
  • The bazillion of RSS bots that host no discussions and just post 5 threads in a row
  • Non-English content that I can't read anyway (not their problem obviously)
  • Porn
  • Thirsty anime models
  • I probably forgot some more content I'm not interested in

Do you use "new" for anything specific?

edit: I listed "spam" in the title originally, I felt this was unfair
