My hand joints are getting better finally and I wanna learn an instrument. The thing is, I'm dumb and have struggled really badly with reading music in the past.

I would love to see a visual representation of where US tax dollars are going based on address. Especially if it has pretty charts.

Hello! I was scrolling along until I saw an article about a Pardon in Texas. In the comment section people talked about how pardons are even still a thing and one User pointed out that they are totally easy to abuse. Like why can't a governor hire a hitman to kill his political Opponents and then just pardon him? Would this be possible? Can a governor or let's say the president just straight up do that?

Thank you all in advance!

I've seen many tv shows (eg debate shows and news programs) start to promote threads, instagram and bluesky.. and no longer mentioning twitter. I never see any mention of Mastodon or Lemmy. Or anything similar.

Should we be trying to push these to these people? Or are we better without them there (case in example is the misinformation pushed by shows like the Jeremy Vine Show, GB News and generally the rightwing tabloids)??

What do you see as the benefits, and what do you see as the disadvantages?

Cheers people!

I used to think that age equated to percentage of life lived, thus I thought that most people live to close around 100.
But it also made me think that people only get old when they're like 80.

I mean like actually "old". The "old" adults were referring to. At that age I considered those 14/15 year old 9th graders old, just a bit different "old".

Or for your youngsters - have you ever seen a working pay phone at all?

Just a random question I’m curious about.

Have you ever been asked to participate in a political poll? Do you know of anyone who has?

If I find myself overplaying certain songs, I sometimes have to force myself to take a break because when I don't, I usually end up ruining/disliking the song. I hate when this happens because perfectly good songs that I love end up irritating me because I have heard it too much. Do you stop listening to those songs or just play it as many times as you like?

EDIT: changed title to be open-ended.

Lemmy, I have completed tens of modules across several different universities. I have been course-hopping for long enough that I’d have a bachelors degree by now had I found and stayed on a course that suited me. I can’t be asked to commit to one and study it for yet another 3 years before I get a degree*. Yet I feel like all of the effort that I have expended up to this point will go unacknowledged, just because it was spread across several unis and doesn’t fall into any of their pre-defined study plans. I am a person driven by short bouts of intense curiosity of the type that dives down Wikipedia rabbitholes**. I want to do a highly qualified job but am failing to fit in to the rigid framework that academia sets you. I have several Master’s theses that I’d start researching tomorrow if the system let me. Yet without so much as a bachelor’s I might as well go work in a supermarket. How do I move on from here?

*Perhaps it’s also because I’m now in my early 20s and finally want to have some time to explore.
**I am a logical thinker and predominantly interested in STEM topics.

For me it was Brasov in Romania. It was more beautiful than I had expected and really liked the vibes of this medieval city.

Doesn't need to be a life or death situation, just any moment in your life where you found yourself saying "Holy shit, I can't believe this is happening!"

Personally, I'm partial to a thin crust cheese pizza folded and dipped into either hot sauce or ranch. But I also enjoy modest amounts of meat, greens and pineapple.

There are so many out there, with varying benefits, risks, and ethics. I'd like to know what to recommend when asked, and also what I could use for myself.

Some areas that could be good for discussion:

  • Locally hosted models (both for low and high powered devices)
  • Open source models (also calling out "open source" models that aren't actually open source)
  • Privacy friendly tools/frontends (ex. DuckDuckGo's AI chat for anonymous use of some "free" models)
  • Unified interfaces for multiple models, or 'pay as you go' platforms instead of paying for individual subscriptions

Edit: while I'm at it, does anyone know what I should do when I'm waiting for a coincidence/adventure to happen, but it never comes? I can't really go outside and arrange for it to happen because I don't know what I'm looking for.

I know this is kind of random. I've got a black necklace with a long round pendant on it, and I think I look better topless when I wear it. I'm not sure why.

For some reason this happens to me, but only with Orbit. At least the watermelon ones (I prefer chewing gums that leave minimum taste), I don't know about others. It just turns into a disgusting paste.

I personally use libera.chat because it's the most active IRC server out there. is there any other active servers? I found this website to search for different IRC servers https://netsplit.de/networks/
