I've been sitting on this question for a while, but got inspired to post by the Wikipedia question.

I. Love. Web 1.0 shit. I think a decent chunk of us using Lemmy do. Do you have any Wayback links you want to share? Bonus points if you have a story with them (mine, due to length and meandering, are in spoiler tags as an act of mercy).

A couple of mine:

This article from 1997..

StorySeveral years ago, my wife and I were looking at places to move. One house we looked at was peculiar. There were bars on the basement windows (very rare here), big bookcases along every wall of the basement, and some weird fixtures that looked like they once housed electrical equipment. We passed on the place, but I got intensely curious about the former owner and started digging.

It turns out it was the home of Fred Ennis, a journalist and former Parliament Hill Bureau Chief. He created nepean.com as, in his words, "the first Internet community newspaper, with all the news but none of the paper". He covered local events and goings on, and worked with columnists including one Don Nox, who wrote the linked article. Don's quote here has stuck with me for a while:

Society is a very perverse device. If you stand in front of it and call it a stupid excuse for a machine, and a designer's bad dream, it will suck you into it's beater and turn you into dust and moldy straw. All anyone will ever remember is that you were weird. On the other hand, if you position yourself carefully and strategically off to one side and call it these very same names, it will shower you with candy, and sometimes loose change and small denomination bills. People in this position are called eccentrics. Now you know the difference.

Next, the homepage for The Church of the Universe, circa 2002

Story (spoiler tag removed due to formatting weirdness, mercy suspended)

To this day, there is nothing I find more interesting from a distance than new religious movements, and the early web was lousy with pages for them.

I came across this one while looking for backissues of Cannabis Culture, a once renowned underground publication out of Vancouver, BC, lead by activist-cum-political prisoner and libertarian weirdo Marc Emery. He's an interesting character himself, but not the focus today.

While it seems you can only get physical backissues of CC from Ebay these days, they still host articles from way back, and these two from 1994 caught my attention. Checked out the organization's website, and oh boy - if you like web 1.0 design and content quirks, you're in for a treat. It's a fascinating look at a group from a time when cannabis activism was filled with freaks and weirdos (said lovingly) - kind of miss those times v. the more corporatized cannabis 'culture' post-legalization.

Have a few more in mind if I can dig them up, but I'm curious what people end up sharing here!

Edit: Apparently I suck at spoiler tags.

Original question by @Justathroughdaway@lemmy.world

Ask any Australian/New Zealander who grew up in the late 2000s or early 2010s what they're favourite show was and they'll probably say something by Chris Lilley. In particular Summer Highs High or Jonah From Tonga. I used to love watching these shows when I was younger and Lilley is such a great actor. To this day there still quoted in schools all over NZ and Australia.

I'm trying to find a fairly recent thread where someone was asking about Kindle alternatives. I tried the search functionality within Sync and then I tried duck duck go, mentioning lemmy in my search keywords but no joy. Is there a better way to search, or can anyone dig out the thread for me?

Mine varies from like 4 to -5, with random flucturations into -7 to -8. I'd say it averages out at like -1.

Not something I thought of a lot when I was back in US since USA is... a pretty bureaucratic name by all means. But I just realized that some countries have really fascinating names in their local language

Like how China names itself Central/Middle country in a very grandiose way (as in, we are the center of the world), or Japan being "land of the rising sun"

I have a Samsung Tab 6 with a very nice 8" oled screen. I want to use it in combo with my Bluetooth controller for my Steam Games (for a little more reading room). I've tried Steam Link and it works, but the lag of my wifi make it quite unplayable so, since i already have a dock and an hdmi cable, i was thinking to buying a second dock ( as the one in the photo). Anyone has done anything similar? Can you suggest any free android app to do the mirroring from the deck to my tablet??

It seems like a weird question, but other than a couple of users who I recognize on Lemmy, the rest seems to be robotic.

I don't see a lot of creativity or uniqueness.

Why is that?

Check your web history for "wikipedia", what are the most recent 5-10 Wikipedia pages you have read?

I was talking to a friend and complaining that the nearest grocery store is 3km from me, he says that Europeans consider that a reasonable distance to the store and I'm just being lazy.

I don't have a car, I don't have a bike, and the bus only comes by every four hours. Am I being unreasonable for not wanting to carry groceries 3km in 30C weather, or is my friend full of shit? Neither of us have been to Europe.

I live in Hong Kong and it feels like most American fast food here involves oil and deep fried food. Then I remembered at one point HK local fast food were full of MSGs.

It led me to this question. What is your local fast food obsessed with? It can be an ingredient, spice, sauce, cooking method, etc.

(As a general concept of how a society should run, not intended as a US-specific question.)

I sometimes see people on the internet saying that giving people easy access to guns is too risky and there should be stricter gun control, while simultaneously wanting to abolish the police? I'm just confused on what people really want?

You cant both abolish the police and then also disarm the citizens, gotta pick one. So which is it, internet? Self-policing with guns? Or reform the police?

[Please state what country you're in]

::: spoiler

(Also its funny how the far-right of the US is both pro-gun and pro-police, I'm confused by that as well) :::

First, don't tell me that the answer is just to "not bottle things up", because that's objectively incorrect too. Society doesn't want you to have any negative emotions. I need to know how to not express negative emotions at all whatsoever unless I'm alone. I know it can be done because it is done in many other people on the planet.

Edit: Ok so I think one of the things I want to try doing next is ask for a med change from my psych provider.

Ok Lemmings look, I love life and I love my family, so I'd hate to have to blow my fucking brains out. So what's another strategy for tuning out this incessant lava chicken?

Alternatively, does anyone have a time machine and enough money to convince Jack Black to not do the Minecraft movie?

I usually do this every night when I'm about to sleep, and also during times when I want to decompress from the barrage of notifications. Sure, DND mode is a thing but I really enjoy the feeling of being unreachable sometimes. Having it on DND still makes you receive the notifications. It's also easier than turning your phone on and off. Regarding emergencies, I really don't have any situations where it'd be so pressing for me to react immediately to something. And either way I'd never sleep having volume/vibration enabled from calls.

Is there anyone that relates to this?
