A great site with studies showing how bad AI is and how it changes people etc for the worse.

"AI is a tool" he said. Hmmm, we're not sure a 'tool' needs to be used this much instead of doing it yourself.

There's another word for that...

A new list has been added to ublock origin that "removes a number of various AI buttons, nags, prompts, etc. across various sites."

Thanks to Elle for sharing.

Hi. I'm neurodivergent and I love computers. I probably emotionally depend on them a lot besides other interests like art. FOSS and Linux world felt like home. I do not use(as little as possible) any proprietary(or related to AI in any way) software. I feel raw disgust towards those. I feel like all stability in life is gone now that Linus has AI "brainrot". What can I even do? What can others do? "Fork it"? "Rewrite it"? Okay, I'll wait like 35 years. But being serious I feel lost. BSD family doesn't feel like a solution for me. Everything else is experimental at best. I'm certainly not touching Windows or Mac ever again. Should I consider running something like older Debian exclusively to at least "conserve" myself until solution comes up or things change? I almost never post, but I ask you, the digital void, for advice. I don't want to feel this way.

Yes, using 'AI' for translation is harmful and unhelpful in many ways. This article explains some of the reasons why.

Translator Apps (lemmy.zip)
submitted 1 month ago by BozzyBuzzard@lemmy.zip to c/AntiAI

How does everyone feel about local translator apps? I need a translator App for work with tts. I ditched google and got something called Rtranslator, and Sherpa tts which uses something called piper models.

I'm not sure what all of that amounts to, or if this any better than using google with llms? I can barely understand the language used when I try to learn what these components are. I'm not even sure if it is AI, or even the same kind of ai as something like google translate. Is is just as bad for the world as everything else? Or is it any better in any way other than being Foss and local? Do those things even matter when fighting ai?

As data centers are shut down by angry mobs and AI surveillance cameras are ripped from their poles, the world’s tech billionaires and CEOs are waking up to the reality that the masses are, broadly speaking, not on board with their plan to automate the world with AI.

So, I'm a bit mixed on AI. I've never been a Luddite, but there's a lot about this AI revolution I don't like. I have used ChatGPT a few times. I don't think it knows much about me, but I'm afraid to ask. I joined "Fuck AI" but I don't see them on my community list. Maybe they went away, or maybe they kicked me off for not being anti-AI enough. I don't really care. I'm gonna join this comm because I dislike AI more than I like it.

So anyway, I'm at work, and for a while we had Copilot, then they said we couldn't have it, and now they say we can have it again. Mostly I ignore it because Copilot is just stupid. But I blanked on how to google (DuckDuckGo actually, but whatever) a template for what I needed. I wanted to make a quick disc sleeve, something I could print, cut out, and put a disc in. I know, two 4x4" squares that share a side. Not hard. But I wasn't thinking about that. Anyway, I told Copilot to make me a Word template I could print and cut to put a CD in.

It gave me a 2x3 table. I see what it was going for — it was going to make those squares bigger and different sizes and change the weights of the edges and all that. It just... didn't.

I know, Copilot sucks and Microsoft should give it the Old Yeller treatment. I don't like Microsoft. I use Macs at home. I do not have Apple Intelligence turned on, though it's pretty much garbage anyway. I feel like it's a waste of resources. But at work, I have to use Windows and Word and Excel and Outlook and some proprietary shit they have. They've suggested I install it at home. I say "I have a Mac." They say "you can get Dells and HPs pretty cheap." I say "you just upgraded every computer here, give me one of the old ones" and that ends that conversation. "Put up or shut up." They won't put up, so they'll shut up... for a while. Then they'll come ask me again. The bonus is their old Dells and HPs aren't fit for any AI, let alone the Windows 10 they do run. If I had one of those computers, I'd take out the hard drive, drop an SSD in it, and install Linux on it, then run power and ethernet to it and remote in from my Macs, and use it as a server. 8th gen i5 with 4GB DDR3, I can probably up that to 8GB, would be fine for a Plex server and some other stuff.

These workers are training AI to take their own jobs.

There’s a hidden workforce powering the rise of ChatGPT, and nearly 1 in 5 of them have fallen into homelessness.

We investigated America’s AI sweatshops, and found a new gig economy run by Big Tech.

A list of projects that pledged not to use AI or are disrupting it. Very useful for finding software that either isn't or won't be 'AI' tainted, even if they're forks of those that are.

In this video Dr. Fatima gives an empathetic speech, and information, about 'AI' and how to actually work against it whilst being caring, collaborative and collective.

Personally this convinced us, not to start using 'AI', we still don't like it and don't want to see output from it ever.

However, we do see that shaming others is not necessarily the best way to stop their use and that if we want to really see 'AI' addiction and use to drop then the way to do that is to help people more. Have more easy to access information when people are struggling and collectively protest the companies killing our planet with it.

Also to educate ourselves and others, getting literate in 'AI' reduces its usage after all. Much like with other harmful things.

AI isn't a tool. (self.AntiAI)
submitted 4 months ago by oftheair to c/AntiAI

We have been thinking about something someone said on a podcast "AI isn't a tool. It's a lack of one." and we agree wholeheartedly.

LLMs, ML and GANs etc aren't tools. Tools expand creativity, skills, and knowledge etc, they solve problems because they were created by people that understand them.

All 'AI' does is make creativity suffer and make people lose their skills and knowledge. Even small things like being able to speak/understand other languages now have gone to 'AI' translation instead of learning those languages, that's a travesty.

Tools are an extension of abilities. 'AI' makes us an extension of itself, thus those that use it are the tools of 'AI' instead, to be used by a machine that is a glorified predictive text algorithm, and that's really sad, any way it's looked at.

So we recommend throwing away these not tools and starting to learn, build back confidence, knowledge, skills, a joy for creating, even if it's difficult at first. It's better than letting a glorified predictive text algorithm steal all those things, and lose them to it.
