Thaddäus Haenke (en.wikipedia.org)
submitted 2 months ago by tychosmoose@lemm.ee to c/wikidose@lemmy.zip

Thaddäus Haenke was a badass botanist who worked around the turn of the 19th century. He is responsible for bringing some of the earliest specimens and descriptions of the flora of the Pacific basin to Europe.

Why a badass? His journey to Cadiz arrived late, so he missed the expedition's sailing for Montevideo. Go home? Nah, he caught another ship, which wrecked off the coast of South America. He swims to shore and makes his way to meet the expedition, but it has left without him again. So this guy proceeds overland, crossing the Andes, collecting specimens and descriptions along the way. On reaching Valparaiso he rejoined the expedition almost 9 months after its departure from Cadiz. They explored the Pacific basin as far north as Alaska, and onward to Philippine archipelago, Australia and New Zealand.

I thought so too, but the article really delivered. I didn't know I was living in The Butthole Era. I suspected it, but I didn't know it.

How about creating your own LAN within the untrusted network?

Something like an inexpensive OpenWRT router would do fine. Connect all your devices and the server to the router. They are now on a trusted network. Set up Wireguard on the OpenWRT router to connect to Proton so that your outbound traffic from all your devices is secured.

Simple items (lemm.ee)
submitted 3 months ago by tychosmoose@lemm.ee to c/edc@sopuli.xyz
  • Victorinox Compact
  • humangear Spin collapsible spork
  • Silicone band as a wallet, carrying cards, cash and a Rite in the Rain notepad

This is pretty typical for me. If I'm traveling very light I may leave the spork at home and carry a Victorinox Manager. If I'm going to be out and about for a while I usually have Knipex Cobra XS pliers and may swap the knife to a Victorinox Explorer.

I'm pretty happy with this new spork. I've kept a humangear Uno in my bag for general use and I like how sturdy and simple it is. The new Spin model locks open to the same length as the Uno but closes down very short for more compact stowing.

In the US, if you land, you must pass through immigration.

~~At least I'm not aware of any airports where there is an international terminal like you find elsewhere in the world. Ours require entry to the country even if you are connecting to another international flight.~~

Edit: yep, none have this.

That and the shrinking ability to grant access to device storage. If that becomes an option only on rooted phones (which seems like the directly Google is heading) it will make the audience for such an app much smaller.

What a bunch of ~~clowns~~ idiots (edited to remove the implication that clowns are genuinely as clueless and incompetent as Sonos execs). When Sonos launched in 2004 they were far ahead of any other company in the connected speaker landscape. And they stayed best-of-the-best for a dozen years. Since the S1/S2 split they have been on a steady down trajectory with no signs of improvement.

Now another bunch of employees are getting the axe while the decision makers who have steadily ruined their service remain at the helm. Good job, Sonos.

If I was shopping for speakers right now I know exactly what not to buy.

Mildly what now?

No. 1970 is 0 in Unix time. The NTP RFC specifies 1900. I had to look it up!

Better to represent it as a 64-bit unsigned fixed-point number, in seconds relative to 0000 UT on 1 January 1900. It's how he would have wanted it.

Just type a user name without an @address and a password and click sign-in. When it fails you should have an option to proceed with a local account.

Keep the tv dumb. Don't connect it to the internet.

I like to check rtings.com for model specs and comparisons. Like, some panel types work well in a bright room, some work better than others when you are watching with a bright light source behind you. The warehouse clubs (Costco, BJ's, Sam's) tend to have good deals on midrange tvs.

Then pair it with a streaming stick of your choice. A generic Android TV stick/box would work.
