This is the biggest problem with Valve at the moment. They're awesome, but only because of the current leadership. Once these guys retire or die, it's very likely Valve will enshittify like every other business.

Valve needs to be hit by regulators at some point. They just have too much market power.

I think if you were to ask "most people" about which search engine they prefer, they wouldn't really understand the question. I remember in highschool a teacher asked someone what operating system they have at home, and she replied "I think it's Microsoft Office".

Tech people tend to severely overestimate non-tech peoples' understanding of tech.

Turns out that Reddit is a lot easier to quit than most people claim or realize. I still end up there from web searches occasionally, because some communities just don’t exist in lemmy (also lemmy frankly sucks as a place for finding niche communities due to fragmentation and shitty search tools). But besides that, there’s nothing particularly compelling about reddit anymore.

I wonder where people are going though? They’re definitely not coming here unless they’re an adult male technology/linux nerd.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Nintendo are cheap bastards, and if they fix the drift issue then they’ll likely cause it to fail prematurely somewhere else. Maybe the rubber will be cheaper so that it wears down and has to be replaced anyways? Or the plastic will be thinner so it cracks sooner, etc.

My head canon for that timeline involves him being hunted down for betraying the united states, and his corpse dumped in the ocean like bin laden so that his grave site doesn’t become a place of worship for republicans.

I wonder if Elon demanded they use this company for identity verification because of their creative use of the letter X

Damn this is eye opening for me. LTT was always my most trusted source for tech reviews. I noticed that they’d make little mistakes every once in a while, but didn’t realize it was part of a larger problem. I actually made a Ryzen 9 7900 buying decision recently because of this video which made it seem like the best value (especially compared to their very confusing 7950x3d review). After watching this GN video though, I feel stupid for not even thinking to check other channels before making a buying decision.

(Although honestly this is a major upgrade over my previous hardware, so even if it wasn’t the best possible option, it’s still a net positive for me.)

I really hope LTT takes this criticism seriously. It’s always gratifying to see misbehavior have consequences on the internet, but these independent reviewers are pretty much the only people on our side as consumers. I’d rather see a course correction than a crash, especially since LMG in particular has a uniquely powerful position and can have real impacts on manufacturers that benefit consumers.

He is a character who is not connected to the main conflict in the story in any way, and is meant to show that the world of middle earth is much larger and more mysterious than what the hobbits/men/elves/orcs are fighting over. His back story was left as a mystery on purpose. The simplest explanation to accept is that you’re just not supposed to know.

There is a whole lot of fan theory and actual letters from Tolkien himself explaining (or rather not explaining) the character.

Can anyone here up to date on their Overwatch lore explain what that means? I’m not being snarky about the game being bad, I just haven’t played it and genuinely curious what they mean by that. From my understanding, the game is about killing each other lol

I’m looking for a new mouse with MMO side buttons, and was wondering what Lemmy thought about it.

My current mouse is a cheapo Red Dragon M901. I love the ergononics, but the durability of the scroll wheel isn’t great. I had to replace the mouse about a year ago because the scroll wheel died (really stiff + wouldn’t click), and now this one is starting to show the same symptoms.

I would like wireless (esp. bluetooth), but I’m a little skeptical about it because my last wireless mouse (EVGA X20) had really inconsistent wakeup. Sometimes it would fall asleep while I was reading something, and I’d have to shake it for 2-5 seconds to wake it back up. That’s extremely annoying :/

The razer naga mice seem like the top tier stuff, but they’re very pricey and my experience with razer hardware reliability in the past has not been great.

Also I’m a linux user, so if the mouse comes with a linux compatible configuration utility, that’s a plus (open source? that’s a plus plus even if the mouse itself is mid :P)

(sorry if this isn't the right community for this)

I noticed that Jetbrains has a discount for users of "competitor products", and was wondering if anyone here has experience with it?

I've been considering buying CLion, so this caught my eye. However, I can't even think of any C++ IDE that isn't free. I exclusively use Sublime Text for my C++ work, but I assume that's not common enough to count?

Doesnt lemmy have a karma system already? I can see up votes on my posts, and a sum total on my account page.

Or do you mean something else by “karma”?

Say you’re having major surgery, like installing some new ribs, and half way through the surgery, while your chest is wide open, the surgeon just leaves. Like he just decides to go home and leave you there.

Eventually you’ll wake up, right? You’ll wake up with your chest open, probably in a lot of pain.

Would you die? If you manage to stay calm and just lie there patiently, how long could you survive? Besides something like an infection, what would be the things that could kill you in that situation?

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I always love seeing stuff like this where a community comes together to keep a console alive.

The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?
