This could have been buttcoin, sneerclub or techtakes, but y'know pick one.

‪Lightcone is the rationalist org that runs LessWrong these days and runs totally not race science conferences.

SBF donated $6m to Lightcone. Then FTX in ch 11 wrote demanding a clawback (cos it was stolen customer funds). Lightcone ignored it. This went badly for Lightcone. They had to sell a building and their funding has dried right up.

this is Oliver Habryka, CEO of Lightcone:

"Oh man, we are being sued by FTX. I should hire a bankruptcy lawyer to prepare our defense." WRONG. I mean yes, of course go ahead and hire a bankruptcy lawyer to prepare the defense. But in-parallel use language models to prepare a defense yourself, then run the defense by the lawyer you hired until you think you understand reasonably well what the core constraints are. Then work together with the bankruptcy lawyer on the defense.

Habryka wrote this a few years after Lightcone completely fucked this one. Well done, Oliver.

Oliver wrote an internal Lightcone Infrastructure memo that lists the top enemies of the Rationality movement. He saw fit to post his Enemies List to the site, because that's a very normal thing to do.

no. 2 is a neoreactionary troll who ran a downvote bot in 2013-2014.

Emile Torres is only #3, sorry Emile some of us are just better at increasing existential risk

no. 4 is Ziz. I am officially considered worse than the literally murderous death cult.

what can i say some of us have just got it

also I trounce complete pikers like (checks notes) Peter Thiel

LessWrong used to call themselves a "phyg" in the hope that the word "cult" would not show up in Google so much as being associated with them

"There was a post, [pause], I forget who wrote it" <- the kind of thing I have said several times attempting to avoid leaking rationalist-evidence-bits.

gotta keep that power level under wraps

Jacob Silverman:

It's March 2025. Everyone has resigned from OpenAI except Altman, a single H1B programmer, 50 lawyers, and the guy who refills the keurig. The company is worth $4 trillion.

twitter comment:

they made something that actually does not run doom, which is a first at least

[-] dgerard@awful.systems 37 points 1 year ago

whoops! that was our error! It's actually "Enhanced Display for Grocery Environment" which is at least an acronym. Fixed.

it was acausally enabled before you clicked on it, for your comfort and convenience, like the new ad tracker built into Firefox 128

they're still least worst, but "oh the fuck no" is the correct reaction

I am well acquainted with this genre of article and I ain't reading all that. Not bothering to be involved with this example was the obviously correct decision, even if Trace kept nagging after I'd already said "no thank you" (that famous rationalist grasp of consent).

This in the companion article caught my eye:

While I am not personally a rationalist,

Trace, I have some unfortunate news for you.

comment:

I was at Manifest as a volunteer, and I also saw much of the same behaviour as you. If I had known scientific racism or eugenics were acceptable topics of conversation there, I wouldn’t have gone. I’m increasingly glad I decided not to organise a talk.

EA needs to recognise that even associating with scientific racists and eugenicists turns away many of the kinds of bright, kind, ambitious people the movement needs. I am exhausted at having to tell people I am an EA ‘but not one of those ones’. If the movement truly values diversity of views, we should value the people we’re turning away just as much.

my brother in the Acausal Robot God, I have some unfortunate news about what your fellow EAs have espoused for the past twenty years.

Austin from Manifest responds that leftist views would obviously much more damaging to EA than racist ones, because reasons.

and yet you signed up to Awful Systems

As a large language model, absolutely

BEAT SKELTON on Twitter points out:

MY ONLY CONTRIBUTION TO THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE DAY IS THAT THE RADIOLOGISTS PROBABLY DIDN'T ACTUALLY USE AN AI, THEY JUST TOLD MISHA THEY DID TO MAKE HIM SHUT UP.
