Except e-bikes operate in many places that cars do not. Cars being an issue isn't an excuse for anarchy everywhere else. I've seen plenty of people on e-bikes driving 30+ km/h down a public pathway in a park; you won't see a car anywhere within 300 feet of this but it's a clear danger to those in the area.

And I'd hardly call a speed limit for a bike a "burden," and e-bikes have operated in a nebulous zone as mentioned above, they are motor vehicles.

Even if you had to get a plate and follow a speed limit, there are still a million reasons why people should get out of cars and onto bikes (e- or otherwise) to move themselves around.

Snagged one with little trouble, but I was early -- checked at XX:57 and the sale had gone live already, and I had put the money for it in my Steam Wallet last week as I wanted as few failure points as possible.

These things don't usually work out for me, so I have plenty of sympathy for those who got hung-up on the ordering page or just came a bit too late. For myself, I'm quite excited and it seems like it could even be here by the end of the week!

Back after a short absence! The Winnipeg Jets face the St. Louis Blues tonight in a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive. The St. Louis Blues have been a hot team since the Olympic break and both teams have similar records for their last 10 games: 6-3-1 for the Jets and 6-2-2 for the Blues. Heading into St. Louis has been a challenge for the Jets in the past, so they'll need to play their best tonight to secure the win.

Koepke - Toews - Rosén
Niederreiter - Namestnikov - Lambert

Winnipeg will face a stiff challenge as they try to collect more points in that race for the last wildcard spot as the Colorado Avalanche visit. The season series between the two teams is tied 1-1 and the biggest question as to who's going to take tonight's game is which Winnipeg Jets team will show up on the ice tonight. Recent games have seen them play some of their best hockey this season, punctuated with lapses that demonstrate why they're where they are in the standings. Hopefully the team can come out with energy and tonight's game is an entertaining one!

The Jets will see if they can rebound off one of their worst performances of the season as they face the New York Rangers, a team only 2 points behind them in the standings that can’t win at home but tends to be a solid road team.

The Winnipeg jets return to home ice to face the Vancouver Canucks after a dominant showing on Thursday that led to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The trade deadline has passed, though, and the Jets will be looking at several changes to the lineup.

Of note, Winnipeggers will get their first look at Isak Rosén tonight, the promising add to our forward depth received as part of the Stanley/Schenn trade. Jacob Bryson will also likely make an appearance on 3D paired with Heinola; while small, he's a good puck mover that should be able to help break out of the defensive end. Lambert will also play tonight, called up from the Moose yesterday, likely making him a fixture while the forward core deals with injuries.

It’s a tall order for the Jets to start another winning streak tonight as they face off against the top Atlantic division team. That said, the Jets have a knack for showing up and beating teams they shouldn’t, then losing to teams they should crush, so who knows what’ll happen tonight!

Well, he called Greenland "Iceland" 4 times in a meandering, somewhat incoherent ramble of a speech.

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 34 points 3 months ago

Rather poetic less than 24 hours after Trump paraded out a map with American flags over Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela.

I mean, I understand this is all reductive, but I think as a CEO the concept of "commercial viability" is kind of an important one since you need money to pay your employees. And players have always had the power; just don't buy slop you don't like. Buy stuff you do like. Sheesh.

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 2 points 3 months ago

Seems like suspension without pay would be reasonable. That said, I have no idea what Gimil’s charter or laws or like. Probably a part of civics I should brush up on.

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 1 points 3 months ago

7-day suspension with pay…so he, like, gets a paid vacation for having terrible conduct?

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 7 points 3 months ago

This is fantastic. I'm not some Linux fanboy, but I am increasingly disillusioned that Microsoft cares to make Windows good in any meaningful way. Vulkan seems to be a far more efficient low-level graphics API compared to DirectX these days, and what's been coming out of Valve seems to support that idea: a lot of performance issues on Linux are solvable problems.

I'm writing this from my Steam Deck which has become a more than capable general use PC even on its limited hardware. I was planning on getting a Steam Machine, and this ongoing work Valve is doing only makes me more confident in using that cute little box as a full jump away from the Microsoft stack. I recognize that's not a viable option for everyone out there, but I'm excited to try.

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 2 points 3 months ago

This is a good list. The reality is that at the end of the day, you have a really important question to answer: Do I want access to this outside of my home network?

If you don't, this can all be pretty easy; if you do, it gets significantly more complicated for most solutions.

Keeping it internal, it can be very simple: get Docker, fire up some containers of software you like, make sure you have your ports mapped properly and you're off to the races. You'll want to set up a system to make sure you're at least aware if new versions of your software are released so you can upgrade, and that you have a backup system in place for your data.

I have a few things I now run on my home network, including:

  • Homebridge - enables non-Homekit smart devices to be used with HomeKit
  • Jellyfin - Media sharing
  • Bitwarden (via the Vaultwarden fork) - Password manager
  • Forgejo - Code repository
  • Podsync - Convert YouTube channels to video Podcast feeds
[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 5 points 3 months ago

I self-host Bitwarden and it's been great. Used 1Password back in the day but their shift to SaaS has made it expensive and bloated with a bunch of crap I don't care about. Made sure to set up a backup of the BW databases and auto-updating the docker image that it runs in. Set up secure access for my family, and even managed to host it for a couple friends.

Keepass has always interested me, but I haven't been able to figure out if there's a browser extension that supports accessing databases stored remotely as I use my passwords on a few computers I can't install applications on, but I can use extensions.

Absolutely. It's also an immense amount of work to get a platform up to a competitive standard with Steam; I'm not sure a small company will ever be able to catch up in any short term time frame.

But stores like Fanatical, GreenManGaming, GameBillet, etc. have the better idea of just being stores that focus on getting customers better deals. They don't even attempt to edge onto Steam's turf because a storefront can't compete with Steam, nor can a half-baked launcher.

Reality is that Valve has functionally a 20 year head start on any company that wants to try and edge in on their turf. So it can't be done just to get a cut of sales because you're not going to have the follow-through to build the user base if that's your reason.

[-] buffaloseven@piefed.ca 43 points 3 months ago

I always felt there was promise to a new store with a big backing to challenge Steam. I think Steam is great and it's my primary PC games store, but I see the concern of only having one real player in the market. But EGS simply hasn't done it. It feels like they recognized the reasons Steam is such a huge player in the space; it's not just the library and the sales, but the level of consumer-focused support and features the platform offers. And that's the key, Steam is a platform, not just a store.

EGS has never become a platform. It's missing features, it's social features are anemic, it's like they put some effort in to get it off the ground and not broken, and then have just hoped giving away free games will somehow magically convince people to spend money there.

I think there's reasons to be concerned about Steam, but you cannot ignore how broadly consumer friendly the platform is. Their hardware initiatives only highlight what a complete package their ecosystem is and they're loaded with some of the most consumer-friendly choices in the industry.

EGS is stuck in no-man's land. Steam is a better platform, GoG is more consumer-friendly. Humble has Choice which can be a good deal. Fanatical does a better job with sales and credit from purchase. EGS just kind of sits in a no-mans land with no compelling features other than you don't need to spend money to get games, which is great for us but a terrible business strategy for Epic.
