P2P vs FTP or whatever is not the point. Subtitling the article "Lawsuit: Meta may have seeded porn to minors while hiding piracy for AI training." (emphasis mine) is misleading as it implies they were seeding the files with the intention or purpose to make them available to children.

Also, I find it disingenuous to pretend like seeding a torrent originally published by someone else is the same thing as publishing the file on an FTP site yourself, even if there's legal precedent for treating it that way. Even if the bytes of the file are flowing out from your computer, that doesn't mean you're the one who made the file available, "to minors" or otherwise.

Tech support workers who may or may not speak English as a second language or with a strong accent can sometimes be of actual help and sometimes not, much like people with possibly more familiar accents can. A call center AI has never been anywhere close to solving a problem I've had.

You're no less fucked but instead of a human being getting underpaid for the trouble, a shitty tech corporation is overpaid.

It's weird how you can always find autocracy supporters in every era despite the overwhelmingly strong and incredibly obvious counterargument "what if the autocrat wants to do something you don't like"

If he wrote it now, the patronus animal would be an RTX 5090.

Did Daniel B. Miller forget to type a whole paragraph or was completing that thought with even the tiniest bit of insight or slightly useful implications just too much thinking? Indeed, maybe people don't usually take over governments just for the sake of taking over governments. Maybe renowned shithead Elon Musk wants to use his power as an unelected head of shadow government to accomplish a goal. Nice job coming up with that one, dear Daniel B. Miller.

What could be the true ambition behind his attempt to control the entire state apparatus of the wealthiest nation state in the world? Probably to go to a place really far away where the air is unbreathable, it's deathly cold, water is hard to get and no life is known to exist. Certainly that is his main reason to perform weird purges to rid the government of everyone who knows what a database is or leans politically to the left of Vidkun Quisling.

On one hand I wish someone were there to "yes-and?" citizen Miller to add just one more sentence to give a semblance of a conclusion to this coathook abortion of an attempted syllogism, but on the other I would not expect a conclusion from the honored gentleperson Danny Bee of the house of Miller to be any more palatable than the inanity preceding.

Alas, I cannot be quite as kind to comrade anomie, whose curt yet vapid reply serves only to flaunt the esteemed responder's vocabulary of rat jargon and refute the saying "brevity is the soul of wit". Leave it to old friend of Sneer Club Niklas Boström to coin a heptasyllabic latinate compound for the concept that sometimes a thing can help you do multiple different other things. A supposed example of this phenomenon is that a machine programmed to consider making paperclips important and not programmed to consider humans existing important could consider making paperclips important and not consider humans existing important. I question whether this and other thought experiments on the linked Wikipedia page — fascinating as they are in a particular sense — are necessary or even helpful to elucidate the idea that political power could potentially be useful for furthering certain goals, possibly including interplanetary travel. Right.

Of all the world wide websites on the web of this wide world LinkedIn might be the one I understand the least, for I dread to even try to understand it.

I assume it's like an online CV/résumé where you can list your job experience, which seems sensible enough. But it's also like Facebook for some reason. Well maybe it's good that someone who needs your skills can also come to you and you need some kind of messaging, call it social network type functionality for that. But also recruiters are spammy pests because obviously they are.

Also apparently some people use it as an actual social media and just post their travel photos or random thoughts there, which is wild to me. It's like someone writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper to tell them about the pancakes they made in the weekend. How is this your medium of choice for this? And then there are the influencers posting the kind of baffling crap seen in this thread, which are already a mysterious animal by themselves, but how on earth are they doing this on the same website that somewhat normal seeming people just use to host their professional biography?

It's like you founded a combination of an employment office and a cult temple, where the job seekers aren't expected or required to join the cult, but the rites are still performed in the waiting room in public view. Sometimes one of my friends tells me about the funny and cringe cultist orgy they saw at the employment office. "Why were you at the orgy cultist employment office?" I ask them. "I didn't know you were looking for a job." And they tell me they weren't looking for a job, they just go there sometimes. Or maybe HR announces a bowling night or blood drive or whatever and the email includes a link to let everyone (cultists, job seekers and neither of the above) at the cultist employment service office know. So my colleagues do, then they crack a joke about how annoying and weird all the cult stuff in that office is and we all have a chuckle. Just another day of having a white collar job, telling about their day to their mostly non-cultist white collar job having friends at the cult temple that is also an employment agency for cultists and non-cultists alike.

Also it's hilarious to me that Windows has a built-in global keyboard shortcut for opening LinkedIn in your default web browser and it's fucking Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Super-L, proving that Windows is the true modern successor of Emacs.

I think it's weird that "hallucination" would be considered a cute euphemism. Would you trust something that's perpetually tripping balls and confidently announcing whatever comes to them in a dream? To me that sounds worse than merely being wrong.

I think we should require professionals not to use the thing currently termed AI.

Or if you think it's unreasonable to ask them not to contribute to a frivolous and destructive fad or don't think the environmental or social impacts are bad enough to implement a ban like this, at least maybe we should require professionals not to use LLMs for technical information

Found a good one in the wild

Didn't you know LLM stood for Limited Liability Machine

there’s an upvoted post on here about how to take away the average working class tech worker’s job

Are you talking about mine? The point of the post was that techbros and tech industry workers are not the same thing, and that actually the tech workers whose valor those CEOs are stealing are vulnerable to the same tactics techbro startups have used to fuck over workers in other sectors.

A lot of software devs and tech workers are marginalised, neurodivergent or otherwise socially disadvantaged. Too many people in this thread are completely ignoring any kind of intersectionality just because they’re men.

A lot of people in every industry are marginalized, neurodivergent or otherwise socially disadvantaged.

I am a queer, neurodivergent, left wing tech worker myself. Most of the regulars here are probably at least two or three of those things as well. I know lots of tech workers who are in no way techbros, but I've also met some of the least class conscious, most obliviously racist and misogynist opportunist motherfuckers who would lick the boots of every billionaire on earth for a chance to join their ranks. This is about the latter.

Peter Thiel and Larry Ellison among others proving that at least having billions of dollars doesn't prevent you from experiencing the rather relatable human emotion of thanatophobia.

Oh it must truly suck to be them~

I understand how "white" become the word for a sort of assumed racial default, but it's really annoying to have to play this weird motte-and-bailey when people don't understand or pretend not to understand that whiteness is not about skin pigmentation and never was. Wanna check my skin on a Pantone chart againts Hitler's and then guess which one of us he thought was merely an "honorary aryan"?

I wish we had a better word for it.
