you're saying that in jest like it isn't obviously true. if checks and balances didn't work we wouldn't be playing this cat and mouse game, they would just go unchallenged.

i believe the only path for tariffs now involves congress (as it should), and i doubt congress wants to do this song and dance again, these companies that were affected are big donors afterall.

The Supreme Court has struck down President Donald Trump’s far-reaching global tariffs, handing him a significant loss on an issue crucial to his economic agenda.

Finally.

The judicial branch continues to check, balance and reprimand the Trump administration's actions.

i'm going to keep following this story, he's already got 13 felonies for meddling with fulton county already and now he's at it again. if this goes to court and a jury rules guilty, i really don't know what happens then. he can't get out of a state crime, state crimes can't be pardoned by the president, he still has the felonies. a judge won't be very happy seeing him guilty of a crime again that he already had 13 felonies for.

This is coming from Trump's first term's DHS chief of staff Miles Taylor.

Weeks ago, Trump sent members of the FBI to raid Fulton County of its 2020 ballots in an effort to prove that he actually won the election in Georgia over former president Joe Biden.

“People forget when they hear about this story that [Trump] was indicted on 13 felony counts in Fulton County for trying to meddle in that election.

Trump at it again, trying to meddle with Fulton County, surely it can't go wrong a second time, right?

...there is no federal rule protecting Trump from the consequences if a Georgia jury proclaims him guilty of an illegal search

Remember that state crimes cannot be pardoned.

They claimed it was [because of] foreign interference. They said it was regulatory irregularities in an affidavit. And then Trump said the truth in that interview a couple of weeks ago with NBC. He said, those agents are going to find out who really won in 2020. There it is. He gave up the plot,” said Taylor.

This could be the basis for a case of the federal government conducting an illegal search.

“It's like these people want to go to prison,”

Don't threaten me with a good time.

Hello. Welcome to the Political Optimism community.

I'm writing this post to set some posting guidelines for what kind of content is appropriate for this community. We're a community that wants to stay focused on the reality of our current situation, but keep steady and celebrate the victories, even small ones, without putting our heads into the sand or spiraling into negativity.

This community will mostly revolve around US politics, but optimistic stories from around the world are also welcome. Examples could be stories about Reform UK suffering political losses, or stories about a country stepping up to help climate change.

Please use a flair for every post made in this community. The flairs available are as follows:

  • [Optimistic Post] For any thread about good news, events, or even just a pep talk.
  • [Optimistic Video] Similar to Optimistic Post, but for videos
  • [Seeking Optimism] For anyone concerned about an event and wants someone to find the silver lining, or show how it's not as terrible as it at first seems.

There are some rules for what counts as "optimistic." This community has a specific purpose of informing without sensationalizing, and discussions about what can be done when it seems like the worst has happened. Posts and comments straying too far from the community's purpose will be moderated swiftly.

Here are the rules:

  1. This is a pro-DEMOCRATIC community, not in the sense of the Democratic party, but in the sense of democracy itself. Accelerationism, both sides-ism, and fatalism is NOT welcome.
  2. This is NOT a leopards ate my face community, nor a FAFO community, if you want to celebrate the misfortune of MAGA voters, that should be posted in another community.
  3. We do NOT celebrate physical harm or violence towards any person or official, or anyone close to them, no matter how terrible these people are.
  4. What's more appropriate would be celebrating the crushing defeat and embarrassment of a politician. A rich person's money-making scheme blowing up in their face. Or reports on the low morale within ICE, in Trump's administration, the Heritage Foundation, etc.
  5. Or, alternatively, you can celebrate the retirement and replacement of an old blue dog Democrat with a younger, more progressive democrat.
  6. Any kind of anti-American sentiment is strictly prohibited. "Dumb Americans," "shithole country," etc.

I hope this community can provide an outlet for those who are anxious about the current situation, but still want remain informed about what's going on. Descending into negativity, "doomerism," and fatalism only helps the fascists in power. Strength and courage comes from facing reality head on and headstrong, with no illusions. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

A federal judge has ruled that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cannot re-detain Kilmar Abrego Garcia because a 90-day detention period has expired and the U.S. government has no viable plan for deporting him.

The government “made one empty threat after another to remove him to countries in Africa with no real chance of success,” U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, in Maryland, wrote in her Tuesday order. “From this, the Court easily concludes that there is no ‘good reason to believe’ removal is likely in the reasonably foreseeable future.”

In her Tuesday order, Xinis noted the government has “purposely — and for no reason — ignored the one country that has consistently offered to accept Abrego Garcia as a refugee, and to which he agrees to go.” That country is Costa Rica.

Meg Luger-Nikolai, an attorney, won House District 64A on Tuesday with more than 95 percent of the vote, according to The Associated Press. Her Republican opponent Dan Walsh secured around 4.4 percent.

Meanwhile, Shelley Buck, a former president of the Prairie Island Indian Community's Tribal Council, won an election for House District 47A with 97.6 percent of the vote. Buck ran uncontested in her election.

The Democratic wins mean the Minnesota House of Representatives is restored to an even partisan split. The parties will now operate under a former power-sharing agreement.

these were blue districts, but these are still huge gains in support.

A federal judge has ordered an exhibit about nine people enslaved by George Washington to be restored at his former home in Philadelphia after President Donald Trump’s administration took it down last month.

The removal came in response to a Trump executive order “restoring truth and sanity to American history” at the nation’s museums, parks and landmarks. It directed the Interior Department to ensure those sites do not display elements that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living."

The judge who rules was Cynthia Rufe, a George W. Bush appointee

“As if the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell’s 1984 now existed, with its motto ‘Ignorance is Strength,’ this Court is now asked to determine whether the federal government has the power it claims — to dissemble and disassemble historical truths when it has some domain over historical facts,” Rufe wrote. “It does not.”

even conservative judges are starting to call this guy a fascist

She had warned Justice Department lawyers during a January hearing that they were making “dangerous” and “horrifying” statements when they said Trump officials can choose which parts of U.S. history to display at National Park Service sites.

Fifty-one House members and 12 senators have opted not to run for reelection — on track for the most departures from Congress this century, according to an NBC News analysis. Most of the House members leaving are Republican, 30, and most of the departing senators, too, six.

Fox ominously reports that voters most motivated to vote in the upcoming elections prefer Democrats. In fact, their 52 percent support “is the highest recorded for either party. In 2017, the last time it was even close (50 percent), House Republicans lost their majority later in that cycle.

In a particularly creative expression of anti-MAGA sentiment, a man who goes by the username “biz_dave” says he successfully trained crows to attack MAGA hats. As detailed in a series of posts on Threads, the self-proclaimed “big nerd” and “very part-time artist” stuck some tasty treats, including “peanuts, chicken scraps, mealworms, and dog kibble,” underneath a MAGA hat.

“Once they were coming regularly, it was only about three months to get them to the hat removal stage,” biz_dave wrote.

In a big middle finger to trump, the NY community, and local officials have raised the rainbow flag after Trump took it down.

Some quotes

New York politicians defiantly raised a rainbow flag Thursday at the Stonewall National Monument amid a boisterous, cheering crowd, rebuking the Trump administration for removing the well-known symbol of pride from the LGBTQ+ landmark.

“We will keep doing this,” he said, adding: “Our community is not going to stand for our park, our flagpole, to be disrespected by the Trump administration.”

A rainbow flag still appears on a city-owned pole just outside the park, and smaller ones wave along its fence, where a local volunteer maintains them.
